Successful Install, only boots with installation CD

Asked by Olivier Roussy

Hi!

I had windows 7 installed before on this HP laptop, but my hard drive busted, so there no longer is a windows installation. Now there's only a Ubuntu OS on a new hard drive installed from a DVD (I first tried from a USB key with pendrivelinux.com but for some reason after installing it there was no recognized installation whatsoever). I might install windows later on to be able to use some programs that Linux doesn't have, but I'd first like to figure out how to get Ubuntu to work properly.

I tried using Boot Repair after booting it from first hard disk with installation DVD, with recommended repair, but it did not solve the boot issue.

I reinstalled Ubuntu again, did not try Boot Repair recommended repair this time from knowing it won't work, but I got a URL to see what could be the issue.

Let me know of any more info you may need!

Thank you :)

You can boot to the Live CD desktop and chroot into the installed OS. OmgUbuntu has a guide "sticking it to GRUB". You can also run updates from there which may help too.

Can you help with this problem?
