Ubuntu 15.10 on HP-Pavillion stalls when attempting to install Driver for Epxon XP-211

Asked by Pablo

During installation, the printer program identifies epson-201304w as a downloadable driver as supplied by the Seiko Epson Corporation. However, it stalls when installing. Then I went to the Open Printing page of the Linux Foundation (http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Epson/Epson-XP-211_214_216_Series) and downloaded the driver. I consulted their instructions on How to Install (https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/DriverPackages), but was unable to follow the instructions to success. I tried opening the downloaded driver with the Ubuntu Software Center, but got the message: that this should be installed "via your normal software channels", whatever that means. In any event, when I gave the command to install through the Software Center, it stalled again.

Previously I have successfully installed the driver for this same printer in 14.04 or 14.10 on both Samsung and Toshiba. I thought to copy the Epson files from the opt folder in one of these, but didn't know how to paste into opt on the HP. Nor did I know if this would work.

Thank you for your help

Was the printer connected and switched on when you issued the lsusb command?

What was the full name of the Epson driver package that you tried installing? What exactly failed when you tried installing it?

What is the output of the command
dpkg -l | grep epson

Thank you for your reply.

The printer is switched on and connected. I attempt to install by going to System Settings/Printers/Add. I get as far clicking on "Forward" after choosing the driver and accepting the license. It asks me to authenticate and then it simply stalls. No error messages. (See screenshot.: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r42080sasvjxf7d/Screenshot%20of%20Installing.png?dl=0) I eventually close the window using xkill.

The Printer is Epson XP-211 214 16 see screenshot https://www.dropbox.com/s/bc8wyvt8c9z2qwf/Select%20Device.png?dl=0)
The Driver is epson-201304w (See screenshot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/75fl5igyln3iy13/Choose%20Driver.png?dl=0)

The command dpkg -l | grep epson produces no output.

In https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/DriverPackages (see original question) it indicates that "Before installing the first driver package install the "lsb" package", and earlier it refers to LSB 3.2. I notice above in the output to lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb it indicates "there are no LSB modules available". Is this a clue to the problem?

Yes, you might have to install the lsb package, but a missing package should not cause the installer to freeze.

Try

sudo apt-get install lsb

and then re-try installing the printer.
