Problem with display and terminal on virtualbox

I have installed VirtualBox on a windows pc. Then downloaded Ubuntu 14.04.3-amd64 and installed in VirtualBox. Upon starting VirtualBox I get a display but cannot resize the display, cannot change the resolution of the display. And I am unable to open a terminal window within the display.
