Installing latest Ubuntu over older version

Asked by Stephen5555

Hello!

I'm completely new to Linux and have currently got an old version of Ubuntu Linux (Approx. 1-3 year old) on a machine at home. I've downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu in the hopes of updating it to the latest, but I haven't a clue where to begin. Do I need to uninstall the old version first, and if so, how? I remember a friend of mine installing Linux once, and when he reformatted the drive he couldn't get rid of the main partition used by Linux. If not, how do I update it? I haven't a clue as I'm still learning.

Thanks in advance!

You could upgrade Ubuntu to the latest release or if you like a cleaner and faster way of getting to the latest version then just run the installer and instruct it to use the partitions occupied by the old Ubuntu install, also instruct it to format the partitions it is going to use.

That should allow you to install the latest Ubuntu version over the older one.

Would it be pretty much step-by-step like with the first install? Or do I need to know any additional information?

Sorry 'bout all of this, as aforementioned, I'm new to all of this.
