HARDY INSTALLATION FROM DAPPER DRAKE

Asked by achevrier

Hi,

Hardy should now coming soon. So, I may have to prepare the upgrade.

I've got Dapper Drake version installed.
In April, when stable 8.04 LTS Hardy will hatch, what will be the process to upgrade from Dapper Drake to Hardy ?
Must I prepare a step by step upgrade ?
Or will I run a direct upgrade using manager tools ?

I have just tested a Dapper to Hardy upgrade yesterday. You can simply use update-manager to do the upgrade.

Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file and replace all words that read as "dapper" to "hardy" as root user:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Save the file.

Type the following commands in terminal to upgrade to Hardy:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It's advised, when available, to use the update-manager rather than editing manually your sources.list, which could break your system on upgrade.

If you want to update now to the hardy beta, activate your dapper-proposed repository, update to the new aupdate-manager and just do alt+F2, and then type "gksu update-manager -d". The update-manager, which has been made to support this task, will tell your that a new version is available and you will be able to upgrade.

Don't forget that Hardy will be released in one month and that it is a beta...

Hope that it helps you.

Hi
It's day time for Hardy release, isn't it ?
So, I'm preparing the bridge.
May I ask for something more ?
I've read on upgrade page : "Make sure the "dapper-updates" software channel is enabled."
What does it mean ?
What do I have to get to "Make sure the "dapper-updates" software channel is enabled. ?

It means that dapper-updates is enabled in the sources.list file. Make sure it is checked in the repositories configuration in the package manager you use, and update the repositories.

Hope this helps

Ok Ralph,
Just one more question :
Exactly which ones must I have in my source.list file ?
Are those 2 adresses correct ? Is there any else should I get ?
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-updates
I've already those 2 adresses in my synaptic repositories.

Hello,

The dapper-updates repository must be enabled for the update (the dapper one too, but it is always enabled).
Unupgradable repositories will be automatically desactivated during the update by the upgrader.

You should have the following line uncommented (without a # behind) :

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse

the different components haven't to be in a particular order (like the lines), and the line could be cutted in differents ones like :

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates multiverse restricted

According to your sources.list, you have nothing particular to do with the repositories in order to upgrade to Hardy.

If I say it in your mother tongue :

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates multiverse restricted

Don't hesitate to ask further questions !

Thanks a lot Nicolas.
Thanks for translation too :) It could be usefull for french !
Yep, I have other questions ! Here they are :

QUESTION ABOUT PRIOR ACTIONS
To "make easier" the upgrade, I've decided, before doing any thing :
1/ to check above Nicolas recommanded dapper-updates channels are uncommented (without a #)
2/ to close backport, Ekiga and skype channels (commented with #).
3/ to save on CD or DVD all my personnel files (home), including hidden ones.
4/ to save on CD or DVD all my sql datas and other datas used for specific accounting applications

Are those 4 prior ideas pertinent ?

QUESTIONS ABOUT NEXT STEP :
The second step we can read on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades page, is :

"2. Be sure that you have all updates applied before you upgrade."

From my point of view, that should mean I have to launch update manager, using ubuntu main menu -> system -> update manager.

However, do you think it would be preferable to use command in a terminal as :
$ sudo apt-get update
or are menu -> system -> update manager ways better ?

Concerning your problem :

QUESTION ABOUT PRIOR ACTIONS :

3) and 4) steps are not necessary, but it's a good and prudent thing to do.
2) step should be not needed anymore (as the upgrader deals with this automatically now) but in this way you're sure ;)

QUESTIONS ABOUT NEXT STEP :

For this it's about the same thing to use a graphical frontend (update-manager) or use apt in a terminal. Just be sure to check for updates in update-manager (using the appropriate button to reload the packages lists) and apply updates, or type "sudo apt-get update" and then "sudo apt-get upgrade" in a terminal for dealing with this.

It's only for the upgrade from an Ubuntu version to another that it is *very* preferable to use update-manager than modifying sources.list by hand and then using apt in a terminal, and this for conflicts resolving, obsolete packages removing, system cleaning, preferences migrating...

Have a nice week end / Passez un bon week end :)

Unfortunatly, process stopped before the end, after a persistent "white window" (see below in french for details)

This happend during "configuration" step.
I had to shut down my computer.
Sorry for that.

Anyway, as I saved my datas on separate CD, I now, would like to use LIVE CD or ALTERNATE CD I burned, for a clean instal.

My question is : if I launch instal from CD,
1) will CD recognize my partitions (/swap, / and home),
2) will CD instal application rewrite above Dapper on swap and / partitions
3) will CD instal application let /home partition without wrinting on it ?

Maybe is there somewhere a "how to" which explain how to use CD to install a new Ubuntu version above an old one ?

I've choose to use ALTERNATE CD and manual partitioning options, without formating /home partition of DAPPER.
I'm now using HARDY with real pleasure.
Thank's a lot for your help.
