My computer is running on a 32 bit version of Ubuntu rather than 64 bit. How do I change to a 64 bit version of Ubuntu

Asked by John Wilson

I am running on a 32 bit version of Ubuntu but with 5.8GB of memory I should be running on a 64 bit version.
When I inserted a live disk I got all sorts of warnings so I backed out.
What should I do?

I have never done this, but have heard that you install 64bit over the 32bit. Would be like a new install.

You will need to wipe the 32bit out and reinstall with 64bit

Note that the 32bit install uses PAE which can address up to 64Gb RAM. Only restriction is that each process will only see 4Gb RAM

My machine keeps greying out and freezes when I open documents or save them.
The computer is about 5 years old and I thought I was running out of RAM.
The memory is 5.8GB and I was going to get more.
How do I wipe the 32bit?

Boot to the 64bit Ubuntu install media and select to use the entire disk. This will wipe any settings and data you have so be sure your backups are up to date.

I assume you don't dual or multi boot.

Then you will need to boot to Windows and remove the Linux partitions and reinstate the Windows boot loader. Then run through the Ubuntu installer as you did the first time you installed Ubuntu.
