That is a good idea as 5.04 is not supported any more. There are really too many variables to calculate how long it will take you. It all depends on the speed of your broadband, computer, the server that you connect to, etc etc.

If I had to take a guess, probably about 1-1.5 hrs, but that is just a guesstimate without any other info.

Also, 5.10 is only going to be supported for another 3 months. With that being said, might want to move up to something that is going to be supported longer to make sure that you are getting bugfixes and security updates.

If you go through the guide williamts99 posted to the point where you have to do "apt-get dist-upgrade" - you will be told at the bottom of its response the volume of data to download. You can divide this amount by your connection speed to get a rough idea of the duration. But as williamts99 says, there's quite a few variables in there.

Personally I do "apt-get -d dist-upgrade" to download it all but not actually upgrade it, and leave that running overnight or whilst I am away from the PC. Then I do "apt-get dist-upgrade" when I get back so I can watch the upgrade and answer any questions it may have.
