Upgrade to current version - need to load intermediates too?

Asked by ssemel

Currently I am running 12.04. I am interested in upgrading to 15.10. Do I first need to install all the intermediate versions or can I go straight to 15.10? Thanks.

12.04 is LTS (Long Term Support). There is some advantage in upgrading to 14.04 which is the next (and most recent) LTS.

A normal issue does not last a long time, but an LTS last longer.

If you decide to to from LTS to LTS look at https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/ubuntu-lts-update-dist-upgrade/

arochester: thank you for your reply, however if I install 14.04, do I first need to install 12.10, then 13.04, then 13.10?

You can upgrade directly from one LTS to another.

Once on 14.04 to continue you should do incremental upgrades.

See http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/upgrade
