Epson Stylus RX420 (3 in one)

Asked by Mary Matthews

I have successfully installed the printer but cannot find how to use it as a scanner. Also how do I check ink levels as no indicator seems to come up on screen. i know it is low in at least one of the 4 colours but don't know which one.
(Still recovering from my years with windows when such things "just appeared"!!)
I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED.

Heh. A great attitude to have! Defeat is for the weak of mind! :)

The scanning application that you could use is called "Sane" or "XSane" and is usually found under Applications --> Graphics.

As I understand it the RX420 is supported by the SANE project - this is confirmed by a post I found on the Ubuntu Forums:-

Thank you, Alan, I have now found and installed Xsane onto my desk top.
I need a bit of 'playtime' with it!! How about my ink monitoring. I
know one of the cartridges needs replacing but have now ay of knowing
which. Being a stingy OAP I don't want to replace all until
necessary!!

Ah, yes. Well up until about 5 minutes ago I was under the impression that there was no tool to do this. I then googled for a bit and found this:-

http://xwtools.automatix.de/english/startE.htm

A program called MTink which does exactly what you need by the look of it. And the best thing is, it's already packaged in Ubuntu. According to this it's in every release:-

http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=mtink&searchon=names&subword=1&version=all&release=all

So all you need do is go to Synaptic Package Manager (under System --> administration) and install it. No idea how you use it but it looks pretty basic to me :)

Success, Alan, thank you. I only needed to replace the yellow cartridge
not all four. Will now mark it as solved. I'm sure I'll be back with
another problem in due course!! Regards, Mary
