Installed over Win 8.1 and now won't boot up

Asked by Andy Grant

I recently (just) installed Ubuntu 14.04.3 on an HP-Stream laptop that was running Windows 8.1.

After running the install from a USB device the laptop will not boot up at all unless the USB memory stick is in the laptop (if I remove the USB memory stick it seems to just power on and then power off repeatedly).

Even when it is in the laptop and boots I get the options from the GNU GRUB menu to: Try Ubuntu without installing, Install Ubuntu, OEM install, Check disk for errors. Totally nervous that I bricked this thing but hopeful it's a straight forward fix.

Thanks from a noob.

i'm able to get into the Boot Manager from the grub command line.

I type 'exit' at the command line and it takes me to the Boot Manager screen. If I select Enter on the default Boot Option (OS boot Manager (UEFI) - ubuntu (MBG4GC) I get "Selected boot image did not Authenticate. Press <Enter> to Continue. I do this and I'm back at the Boot Manager screen.

From the Boot Manager screen, I also see 'Press F10 to BIOS Setup Options, ESC to exit - if I press F10 I am taken to the InsydeH20 Setup Utility and can get to the System Configuration options. From there, I select Boot Options.
From the Boot Options screen, I see the UEFI Boot Order showing the following - which ARE accessible:
UEFI Boot Order
>OS boot Manager
USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk
  USB CD/DVD ROM Drive
  ! Network Adapter

Below is the Legacy Boot Order - which is NOT accessible / grayed out:
Legacy Boot Order
  Notebook Hard Drive
USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk
  USB CD/DVD ROM Drive
  ! Network Adapter

I *think* it would be solved if I could set the primary Boot option to Notebook Hard Drive - but I am absolutely guessing here.

Did you get rid of Windows or did you setup a dual boot?

Hello,

the 'OS Boot Manager' should be able to handle the boot of the PC correctly. There is a possibility that you installed GRUB (Ubuntu bootloader/manager) in the USB stick rather in HDD.

Please read about boot-repair in Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

and consider to run this program, it might help - correct the problem automatically.
