uninstall (remove) Wireshark
Hello,
I have Ubuntu 15.04
I installed wireshark from the software center by mistake.
I tried to remove it the same way but it will not remove the program.
Can you tell me how to remove it through the terminal?
Thank you,
David

Hello and thanks for participating in 'Launchpad Answers'.
Possibly the command you need to run is
sudo apt-get purge wireshark*
be aware of any messages about removing other programs (you might need) before answering 'Y' .

Hello,
Thank you for the reply,
I ran the above command and this is the output.
I do not know a lot about Ubuntu so do not know what this is or how to run it.
I think I started the download and interrupted it but the computer says it is installed.
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
Thank you

Hello,
that's great. You have configured the problematic packages. Please run again
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Then you can try removing wireshark
sudo apt-get purge wireshark*
be aware of any messages about removing other programs (you might need) before answering 'Y' , if you are unsure hit the no 'N' key and copy-paste the results here.
Regards
NickTh

Thank you for your reply,
Here is the output from the first command:
sudo apt-get install -f
[sudo] password for stan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.
I do not know what it means by 32 not upgraded.
Does this mean there are 32 that need to be upgraded or they just do not need to be upgraded?
-------
The result from second command"
sudo dpkg --configure -a
nothing happened. It just went back to the beginning:
Here is the output of the two commands ran together in the terminal:
stan@Roo:~$ sudo apt-get install -f
[sudo] password for stan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.
stan@Roo:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
stan@Roo:~$
Is everything ok or did I do something wrong as the second command did not produce any results?
As for the wireshark, here is the output from that command:
Question? I copied the output from the command above.
Towards the bottom of the output it says, "unknown media type".
Is there a reason Ubuntu does not recognize the media ?
Can this be changed?

Hello,
yes everything seems OK now. wireshark has been completely removed.
'32 not upgraded' means that 32 packages are waiting to be upgraded. So you must give
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Hello Nick
Thank you for your reply, Ok, will run the last two commands.
I wanted to ask, In the above post, at the end of the output, there was a statement:
"unknown media type".
Is there a way to fix this? Or is it something that needs to be fixed?
Thank you,
David

The "unknown media type" messages are just a warning that can be ignored without further consequences.
There is bug #289592 covering that , without a real solution.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. Ok but I still do not know what the unknown media type is.
I am not sure how to remove a file that I do not know what it is.
Is there a way to find out what this is and remove it?
Thank you,
David

Hello again,
Also, as an add - on to the above post, I went to the link you provided,
I have not installed and update - mime. I do not even know what it is so I do not know
if I want to play around with this. I do not want to remove or ruin something.
Any other ideas of what this could be?
Thank you,
David

This is a known nonsense message that you receive whenever there is an update on packages that are related to the mime database.
Some persons say that removing the file /usr/share/
