Screen randomly freezes, crypt login impossible

Asked by crt

After last two kernel updates in Ubuntu 15.04 (so 30 and 28) I am experiencing the random screen freeze as well as there is no way to write my Crypt password the first time I boot (through graphical interface). My workaround is that when Crypt login screen appears I hold power button to reboot the machine (Lenovo T450s) which then gives me terminal login through Crypt. Additional regression appears as whole system freeze at random moments (can be in browser or in OpenOffice). What is even more worrying is that I have dmesg full of errors ([drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!
) - something that was not there before.

Also it does not matter if I have external monitor connected over HDMI or not, it does not matter if I have USB devices connected or not, the Crypt login freeze is repeatable 100%, but I do not know how to get logs from that boot or what to look.

Maybe related to Bug #1488719

Partially might be and I have checked that, but the Crypt issue is not covered there, as well as at me the Crypt login issue is not connected to plugging in of external monitor or devices (which is what that bug seems it is about). Also whole system freeze is not mentioned there so I do not know if it is really related.

I can confirm this behaviour for my T450s runnig 15.04 with 3.19.0-30 kernel. Using the same workaround to input my dm-crypt password. No whole system freezes by now, only random display "freezes" (fragments from other windows or browser tabs when switching windows or tabs).

Kernel log also stating repeatedly

[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!

Please let me know if you need further information and/or log files.

The encryption password issue seems to be different from Bug #1488719
So I recommend that you create a new bug report about it (respectively check whether a bug document for this problem already exists).

Ok, promoting it to bug. I have also checked Bug #1238194 I have added all the HID drivers which are loaded after I login (for second time) in initramfs-tools, but no success.

I also have frequent full system freezes, after which I have to hard reset the system.
Additionally, I have an annoying screen flickering while switching windows. This randomly disappears after some reboots, but reappears again (sometimes) after a full system freeze.

I also had the encryption password issue after a system freeze, but this disappeared after some reboots (or maybe system updates).

System: Lenovo X1 Carbon, Kubuntu 15.10 64 bit, kernel 4.2.0-17-generic
The problems (I believe) appeared only after the upgrade from Kubuntu 15.04 to 15.10.

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS on Lenovo L450
Linux stefano-L450 3.19.0-33-generic #38~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 6 18:17:28 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have a lot of dmesg like:
[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!

only when the VGA cable is connected.

Can you help with this problem?
