install HP5200C scanner

Asked by Andy

I am very new to Ubuntu so please help with the most detailed instructions. I have a problem installing an HP 5200C Scanjet scanner. I tried hooking it up to USB and the system does not recognize it. I hooked it up on a parallel port between the computer and printer. The printer works just fine with the scanner in the middle but Ubuntu does not recognize the scanner. Please help me to install it. Thanks

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb; apt-cache policy hplip

Plug the device into the USB port.

Thank you so much for your help.
Unfortunately, I believe that this is a wrong driver. During installation, it was constantly telling me that this was a printer driver. What was worse was the fact that it made my current printer unusable. I had to reinstall the entire system from scratch to get back my printer. I had to do it twice because when I installed Ubuntu with updates it did not work either. I got different screens and options when I installed Ubuntu without updates, When I do lsusb command it sees the HP5200C scanner but I do not know how I can make it work. Please help.
Thank you
