getting ubuntu wired network to work set up etc

hi need to get my wired network going i have three pcs all running ubuntu 7.10 and a hp officejet fax scanner printer wired to the network , couls someone please tell me how i set this lot up so i can access files from any machine and print from any machine to the one printer. i am new to ubuntu so i need simple idiot proof instructions please. Thanks Andrew

probably need an external system storage rack or server if you plan to do more

 and would be easier to manage if you install a server cd not a user cd

if this is for home you need a wired connection link a usb port external etho guide or similiar device guide

 or

if your machines are already connected beyond the guide given in the other suggestion by zombie

have you given permission in system>administration>shared folders
