Unable to start due to error by GNOME Settings Daemon

Asked by intrader

I have looked at many postings at Launchps (#6482, #25481) and ubuntu forums. I have tried the various solutions, but my 7.10 Ubuntu fails to start becuase of the following GNOME error:
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly

The last error message was

Process/usr/lib/gnome-control-center/gnome-settings-daemon exited with status 127

Gnome will try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you login"

Note that sounds see Ok

Restarting justs gets me the same message.

I have tried to clean up the gnome settings, to no avail.
I also tried what is recommeded in several posts such as described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3918366&postcount=8

I have a lot of information (unsaved) in bookmarks, addresses, eclipse workspace, etc which I would have to loose. If I try t bootable CD from lxf or my own download, it boots. The install step wants to reformat the partition so I stop (cancel), afraid to loose the information.

Thanks for any help. It is driving me nuts for about week

Note: the problem seems to have started after the TimeWarner cable modem hang up. I then (with their help) restarted the modem and rebooted all machines. I then noticed the problem, which continues.
I also notice that ubuntu spends a long time with the disk light on before I get the gnome message, or most of the time, the system will not start - just hangs.

As some have suggested to check on the /etc/hosts, the first two lines look OK
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 Satellite
#the rest are
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

The permissions to the /tmp folder:

drwxrwxrwt 4 root root 4096 2008-03-15 01:57 mysda3/tmp

Note: I did a mount --bind /media/disk to mysda3 while using the bootable cd

I don't find .xsession-errors in anywhere.

I must now reboot with the bootable cd to see if I can get the usb mounted (dmesg does not give me the name of the usb)

I may have bigger problems as when I key-in CTRL+ALT+F2 nothing happens I reboot adn get some error while getting the MAC ADDR
last message
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

Disk error
Press any key to restart

As to the recommendation of moving I had already done this in similar fashion - by deleting the files.

Trying again - I get the same problem but it does output "Disk Error", so I am rebooting

...here I am observing the disk light continuously busy...

then:

on and on and on..... Rebooting

Same thing

I am now looking at reinstall, and need help with reinstall so that I can preserve firefox bookmarks, thunderbird adresses, documents in Documents and workspace in eclipse.

if you can access your system files im not sure how to tell you with that task

you can use the partitioning tool in synaptic

parted

also try going into bios and check your boot order to see if you can change it to read your live cd first

that probably doesn't do much for you but perhaps it may lead you in the right direction

as to your out put unless im mistaken

As some have suggested to check on the /etc/hosts, the first two lines look OK
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 Satellite
#the rest are
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts

fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

this is fine you are recognized as the local host and your getting a ping pong or echo back

this is just the configuration for the new internet protocol localnet is your server or connection

and its signaling all traffic no restrictions

the other formate is the address or signature

so your network is some how getting bound on the finger print

the mac is part of the regonization for the lan physical address.

my thought and im guessing PXE-M0F means bad cable or other

bad modemn or router

hope this helps you feal better if nothing else

Thanks for the messages Robert and Joel. I have tried the moving of the files out of the way, but as described above my laptop does not start due to the

errors.
I have looked to gpartd (from the live CD) as a partition tool to see if I can create another partition to copy the old home directory.
However, I get into a problem when I try to create a partition out of the space a make from the ext3 partition as it tells me that I can create another partition as there as already four as follows:
/dev/sda1 of unknown type
/dev/sda2 of HPFS/NTFS type
/dev/sda3 of type Linux (the ext3 large partition that I can resize)
/dev/sda4 of type Extended (a small extended partition that I don' quite know what it is) - perhaps the live CD makes this)
/dev/sda5 of type Linux/swap

So now I can't carve up a partition to get the old home out of the way.

As to the router, is it possible that an OLPC (XO) machine is messing up the router ? Other laptops are alive and well connecting through my wireless, and of course they also get their IP through DHCP from either the wireless of the router.

I am stuck - I need to find a way to carve up the large linux partition and increase the size of /dev/sda4

i am really a noob but my guess would be a manual install l on the question 5 or whatever number it is on the live cd

if you are looking to partition the c in another form that the live cd doesn't recognize

there is a tool offered to do just this in the munix language which is recognized by linux as far as i know(look to the web on that)

also if you dont need the windows application you may try to inable the sipositories on the live cd in synaptic and look for a program called wipe

(cant remember were it is exactly but youll need to enable rstricte meta or something similar to find it after you reload the list)

this will eliminate any conflict on your hard drive

as to the sectors i am in 1 and 5 which covers all disk space

however i didnt do a manual install but used a new (older) hard drive to boot

with a laptop it will be a task to add a slave so i would suggest transfering your data to other system and just using ubuntu

also if your using vista i have one thing to say from a long time friend who develops chips boards and other processes

vista is bad

Thanks for the info. I know, I am foolish to retain Vista, but work demands it to be on the laptop. So since I like ubuntu I need to find a way to correct the GNOME problem and/or find a way to expand the extended partition to use the space I can make in /dev/sda3 (63GB, 8GB used).

you could probably get an external usb flash cache drive 60-80g

online for cheap this would let you plug in ubuntu when needed

and if the vista freezesorbugs out you wont loose the other data

try this thread to solve your setting situation. take care

Joel, it would probably be expensive. A flash drive is around $264,
But thanks for the suggestion.
Since I have enough space in the dev/sda3 (the linux patition), I need to find a way to increase the size of the extended partition /dev/sda4 to make a backup /home directory. I don't know how to extend that partition. Someone suggested that I get a gparted on a usb, and I am trying that
Thanks

HEY THERE

ive seen alot of those usb portables on ebay lately for cheap 30-100 $ new and used

and i believe the have a

mini disk external hard drive you could pick up at radio shack for under 70$

very similar to a note book storage unit 250g capable but about the size of a cd case

although they only hold about 60g

to use parted would be a choice or by manually configuring the install

heres a link to a video on how to do it so you dont have to guess so much

you may have to "vary" alittle bit for your particular set-up but it may get you going

http://so.youku.com/search_video/q_ubuntu

its in japanese but if anybody knows tech its them

you can also watch movies there when your done for example jumper

have you tried adjusting the slider bar under the disk space option on the live cd?

this may open up the portion of hard disk your looking to use

this is a great system with little difference

youre not going to be able to upgrade to 7.10 from there completly

however many applications are even better in this version minus internet download

minus the bit torrent the fox browser just isnt set tom handle multis yet

Thanks Joel,
What I have installed is 7.10, and it has bee great until one morning when I notice a router problem and I had to reboot.
So there are two problems to solve.
1. The GNOME not starting problem
2. I would like to have /home in a separate partition and not loose what is there now

do these help

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-compiz-manager

sudo apt-get install gnome-compiz-manager-extra

wget http://download.gna.org/gcm/gnome-compiz-manager/gnome-compiz-manager-0.10.0.tar.gz

as far as gnome there may be a conflict withyour initial installl check the bugs page by typing in your system name

or specs to find a patch

you can make a tar file and zip it to an archive or use it to disk

the archive would have to be back dated as well so basically use any development tool offered or try

burning it all to disk eliminating your dependecies

and creating an iso with your specs??

if not theres gentoo, fedora, ar,c blag, sante fe ,pure:dyne, suse, and beryl of the top of my head to get u there

Upon reboot, now the resolution of my screen was change to an incorrect one, and I still get the

"There was an error starting the GNOM ....."

I am pulling my hair!!!

I need to know how create an extended partition to save my /home

My disk configuration as per fdisk -lu

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB 25....bytes

sorry your still having troubles i would see if you can manually add this file under synaptic because not all of the system comes compiled as you may be noticing

/sbin/libconfig.real: /usr/lib/libgdl-1.so.0.0.0

you can probably get a tarball at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=26076

The given link only has files for jMax

I have found /usr/lib/libgdl-1.so.0.0.0 found it in http://www.paldo.org/index-section-packages-page-main-filelist-1-releaseid-101859-binaryid-289548-pagenr-1.html

but I am now sure of how to extract /usr/lib/libgdl-1.so.0.0.0, and I don't know what you mean by synaptic.

As to the partitioning problem, I found a bootable CD for gparted at http://gparted-forum.surf4.info/viewtopic.php?pid=4045 (this is the forum), but it has trouble bringing up X.

synaptic is the package manager

you have ad remove programs in aplications

and under system administration you hjave software preference or

something similar go into this option first

your software repository settings and enable all

then go to system> administration>synaptic package manager

this is were youll find all the cached info from your software enable

youll probably want to do the sudo apt-get updates again

then you may want to try sudo apt-get distibute updates

or install updates

this will bring the synaptic package up to date

you can right click on the target you have stated and then select open with "update manager" or whatever the device is thats suggested

then extract the package to desktop or here or if you can just click install

if you extract it got to it and right click and then you should be able to install

Joel, I am not sure of how to get to the synaptic package manager since I am not able to bring up GNOME. From the Failsafe Terminal I issue

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -- answering Y to all questions -- here I am unsure to what I am upgrading

finally after a lot of processing I am back to the libgdl problem:

/sbin/ldconfig.real: Input file /usr/lib/libgdl-1.so.0.0.0 not found
/sbin/ldconfig.real:/usr/lib/libgksuui1.0.0.so.1.0.0 is not a ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
/sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf_xlib-2.0.so.0.1200.0 is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
/sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/lib/libgksu1.2.so.1 is not a symbolic link

and I am back to the prompt

Rebooting

GNOME problem still there!!!

oh darn sorry im not thinking as clearly as i should in your failsafe terminal which you have been using did you try to do the same thing

in other words your synaptic package manager is just a gui or visual line by line alphabetical selection that when selected

still does the work or processing in the terminal

so if your missing that file libgdl-1.so.0.0.0

sipmly try to get it with a sudo command

sodo apt-get

or sudo apt-get install

as well this may may help

sudo dpkg --configure -a

and sudo apt-get install -f gnome-compiz-manager

i knoe the last one is similar to on youve tried before but it may be of some use

i knows its not malicious im just not sure if it will "do the trick"

sorry your having trouble still

you may want to just simply reboot or reinstall your live cd if your having this much trouble

it took me 3-4 times to get a good seed plant

and after that ive rebooted 20+ times just playing around (switching from gnome to kde or ubuntu studio etc)

dont give up youll figure it out

also i can help you get into hardy haron the new version

which wont be out for 30 days if you think it may change the situation

Joel, amazing that even on Easter Sunday you are attending to this. When I issue
sudo apt-get install libgdl-1.so.0.0.0

Unfortunately I get

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package libgdl-1.so.0.0.0

I don't think that I have the proper synaptic source configured

Then the following command

sudo apt-get install -f gnome-compiz-manager

says,
gnome-compiz-manager is already the newest version
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded

I am now rebooting with sudo shutdown -r now ---->gets many errors, but finally back to the GNOME error

As to reinstalling, how do I preserve /home (I am concerned about directories with documents, addresses, bookmarks, workspaces).

I figured that I should make another partition to save /home, but the system does not allow me to:
1. shrink /dev/sda3 ( the linux partiition)
2 expand the extended partition that ubuntu CD live creates into the new space ----> the partition /dev/sda4 (extended) is locked,
3.create a new partition in the freed space ----> unable to create more that four primary partitions

I will be trying to
sudo apt-get gnome-settings-daemon

I get
E: Invalid operation gnome-settings-daemon

Terrible.
I will not be giving up.

For the making room problem, I downloaded gparted live cd, but it does no boot to X properly why it needs.

Hope this helps

Thanks
1) I am doing resizing using the live CD. The problem is that I am unable to expand the extended partition into the space I have made - /dev/sda3 is the linux partition with 60 GB extra space. /dev/sda4 is mounted by the live CD, so I can't resize it. and I can't set the extra space as a new partition due to the 4 partition limit. I have tried to use a gparted live CD, but X does not come up, so gparted can't be used.
2) In the thread of this very long saga with GNOME, I had already tried the solution - dos not solve the problem for me.

Please help with reinstalling without destroying /home.

Thanks

well i know you cant acess it right now so i went into the synaptic manager and found a package that may be in error which is linked to the daemon in question

once again im a noob and it seems like you are farhter into this than me when it comes to partitions and saving settings and all

but try these and i will also see if i can figure out a line prompt for you to "search for broken packages that may also be causing the problem

or interfering with the gnome application

the packages listed in the synaptic are as follows

youll want to sudo these as usual

dbus

dbus-x11

this is the doc for this if you can read it in the terminal

dbus-1-doc

also heres a list of what i have installed now for the "gnome package"

if you want to you can try to reinstall all of these

gnome-about
gnome-accessibility-themes
gnome-app-install
gnome-applets
gnome-applets-data
gnome-btdownload
gnome-cards-data
gnome-control-center
gnome-desktop-data
gnome-doc-utils
gnome-games
gnome-games-data
gnome-icon-theme
gnome-keyring
gnome-keyring-manager
gnome-mag
gnome-media
gnome-media-common
gnome-menus
gnome-mime-data
gnome-mount
gnome-netstatus-applet
gnome-nettool
gnome-orca
gnome-panel
gnome-panel-data
gnome-pilot
gnome-pilot-conduits
gnome-power-manager
gnome-screensaver
gnome-session
gnome-settings-daemon
gnome-spell
gnome-system-monitor
gnome-system-tools
gnome-terminal
gnome-terminal-data
gnome-themes
gnome-user-guide
gnome-utils
gnome-volume-manager

as you will notice the afor mention packages are not in this list

the gnome-settings-daemon-dev is were i got that other info heres a copy of what it may or may not do

simple interprocess messaging system
D-Bus is a message bus, used for sending messages between applications.
Conceptually, it fits somewhere in between raw sockets and CORBA in
terms of complexity.

D-Bus supports broadcast messages, asynchronous messages (thus
decreasing latency), authentication, and more. It is designed to be
low-overhead; messages are sent using a binary protocol, not using
XML. D-Bus also supports a method call mapping for its messages, but
it is not required; this makes using the system quite simple.

It comes with several bindings, including GLib, Python, Qt and Java.

This package contains the D-Bus daemon and related utilities.

The client-side library can be found in the libdbus-1-3 package, as it is no
longer contained in this package.

## note although this is not directly related it is installed here (on my system)so maybe it will help

the x11 component is as well

packages using a D-Bus session bus.

sorry i havent been more direct with a solution if you wont give up neither will i

try tar -cg to create a .tar.gz file

which should back up the specific branch or directory you have in question

as to sending it to floppy or cd ?? next thing to try

also

Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information.

tar -rvpzfh TARGETPATH SOURCEPATHANDFILE

This will backup the contents of /etc/apt

tar -rvpzfh /home/someuser/aptbackup.tgz /etc/apt/

and you can alway add sudo to get access to all read and write permissions

sudo tar -rvpzfh /home/someuser/aptbackup.tgz /etc/apt/

## hope yo can figure to compile that last one

or does this help

sudo swapoff -a

Next run parted and tell it to use the device in question.

For example, if your /dev/sda drive is the drive from which you want to recover, run

sudo parted /dev/sda

i think this is more to rescue a scewed up failing or whatever partition which i dont suggest because

your going to get even more problems if you bring a rescued system into a clean plant

and the problem just multiply

hang in there hope some of those may get you closer

Thank you so much Joel.

Misfortune hit last night. I had three laptops stolen including the laptop with the GNOME problem. I will save this just in case I recover the computer (unlikely).

Thanks so much for the help

I will call the problem solved, although it is not, but it looks like I will be having a new computer.
