how do i install Ubuntu over Windows 10

Asked by John Bain

I am trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop which presently has windows 10 installed. Each time I try to run the disc all I get is the error message "Wubi does not currently support EFI" I have also tried to alter the boot menu but can find no way of doing this with windows 10. Please keep answers simple as I am not a computer geek and at my age am easily confused.

Wubi has not been developed for over 5 years now. Also if you want to remove Windows 10 and replace it with Ubuntu you are going about the install all wrong.

If you want to wipe Windows off then you need to boot to a USB or CD made with the ISO you downloaded. You don't extract the file. You can then select to use the entire disk. This will wipe the file allocation table (destroying any data on the disk) and set it up for an Ubuntu install.

Hi actionparsnip,
I am trying to boot from the Ubuntu disc. When the disc is inserted it goes to autorun, after the normal popup which says "Do you wish to allow this program to alter your computer etc" which I click on yes I then get the error message. I have tried re-starting the laptop with the disc already inserted but this also failed.
With windows 10 I have found that I can't enter the boot menu which means I cannot change it to boot from disc.

You have to insert the DVD, reboot the computer and instruct the BIOS to directly start the software on the DVD.
For this you most probably have to press a certain key early during the boot process to enter the BIOS setup.

Hi Manfred, I have tried to do this as this is how I would normally install from disc but windows 10 I cannot enter bios to change the boot menu. Normally I would do this by pressing F10 during start up but this no longer works. It is extremely frustrating.

I cannot see how Windows 10 could interfere with entering the BIOS setup.
The BIOS start routine is running as the very first step during booting, and the checking whether the function key for entering the BIOS setup was pressed should be executed before any part of Windows 10 starts running.

But: You have to make sure that you completely reboot the computer, and not just restart Windows. Windows 8 had different possibilities for switching it off with a so-called fast-boot mode, I assume that Windows 10 might have the same.

You probably need to disable secure-boot.

See the instructions at http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com/win8-tips/how-to-disable-uefi-secure-boot-in-windows-8-1-8.html

Even though the URL says Win 8 - the page includes Win 10 in it's discussion of how to turn off secure-boot.

Had some help from the Linux store and managed to get sorted.
Had to press F2 to enter bios then change log in to "Legacy" changed boot to USB/DVD. I also had to change mousepad setting to Basic.
Everything now installed and working fine.
Thanks to everyone for their help.

Download Ubuntu 10.04.1 image from this location:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso
Then, burn the image on a CD by using an image burner program like Nero or Windows Disc Image Burner.
Put the CD in the computer and Install it. The installation progress is so easy. You should set partition settings: Automatically.

If you forgot your Windows 8 password, I suggest try iSeePassword windows password recovery program to reset your Windows 8 password.

@Jackfully, obviously that is not a password problem so don't promote your iseepassword software.
@John Bain, just enter into UEFI setup and change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy, and turn off Secure Boot: http://www.top-password.com/blog/set-windows-8-pc-to-boot-with-legacy-bios-mode-instead-of-uefi-mode/

If possible, download the latest version of Ubuntu and it may support UEFI boot now.

What I have done is made bootable DVD from the iso.

Then from that install onto 32Gb usb stick. and a install onto a portable hdd.

When you boot up make sure you set bios to boot from portable hdd or use F key to select boot option. Ubuntu will then give you the option to boot Ubuntu or windows. This works for me and is very acceptable speed wise.

If you go the the usb stick way make sure you get a good quality one or you will have speed problems.

The advantage of doing it this way is you can give Ubutu a really good try and if it's not for you then nothing lost.

I'm using it on a desk top and Net book with W7 64bit on both units.

The version of Ubuntu I am using is 11.04

if you forgot your Windows 10 password, UUkeys windows password recovery may be your first choice to reset your windows 10.

Ubuntu 11.04 is not supported in any way. It is EOL (end of life). Can you please not only use a newer release (preferably Ubuntu 16.04 which is LTS and supported til April 2021) but can you also make your own question.
