Hello

My experience with Fluxbuntu was not good - I couldn't even get it to install with 128MB RAM. It got about half-way and stopped. Then I gave up (after about 5 attempts).

It was on an old machine I don't use anyway...

Firstly since your system is low on RAM I suggest you to try out Xubuntu.. (A Light flavour of ubuntu which is perfect for Low end systems)

To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. (Alternate CD requires only 64 MB to install and 128MB RAM to Run I strongly suggest you to upgrade to 128MB RAM)

Xubuntu alternate CD can be got from

ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.xubuntu.com/releases/6.06.1/release.1/xubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso (since it is an old system I suggest you to use xubuntu 6.06 with Long Term Support means its supported till june 2009)

Next,Choose a location near you and download the ISO. Then follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Xubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu/Xubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.xubuntu.com/releases/6.06.1/release.1/MD5SUMS
So if you have the xubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso, the calculated value should be c0b54deca75e8e3a87988846c9ae1e44

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

Next,Make sure that all equipment is turned on. Do a clean install, delete all the partitions and this time create a separate /home and any others that you think you may need.

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.
