No sound with Ubuntu 7.10 but ok with Windows XP

Asked by Noel Murphy

Ineed help on sound. I use Windows XP and dual boot to Ubuntu 7.10. Under Win XP my speakers work fine. Under Ubuntu nothing but this error pops up when I try to play back a CD . The drive shows that the CD is mounted and even lists correctly the tracks. The error msg is "PLAYBACK ERROR Could not open resource for writing." If I click Play againg this 2nd msg box pops up "Internal GStreamer error: state change failed. Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer." I already checked that my Admin user id is set for Use Audio Devices. I dont have a regular user id yet. I am new to Linux. The Volume Icon has a red&white mark and produce this msg when viewed "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found." When I go to a Terminal window and display "lspci" I get this back. 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge (rev 03)

Noel Murphy,

Can you please give us some detail about your sound card.
If you don't have one installed, give us info about the make and model of your motherboard.

With Regards,

Problem solved - Even though my software settings were all correct and under Win XP the sound worked great playing back a CD it failed with Ubuntu 7.10. My speaker input/output plugs are attached to the mother board. I took advantage of a $7.95 sale on a 32 bit PCI sound card. After installing it without using the Windows install CD I now have sound although very very low volume. I tried turning up the speakers and the volume setting in [ Juicer 2.20.1 ] all the way to max but still very low volume. After buying a low cost speaker set for $19.95 that came with an electric plug instead of using batteries everything was perfect. So I have now 2 speakers circuits in my machine. I have not yet tried dual booting back to Windows XP to see if it is confused, because who needs Windows XP. I would like to thank whomever Zombie is. He or she was the only one to reply twice to try and help me. This pushed me to resolve the problem another way. I also want to say this was my first ever use of a public online forum for anything ( hardware, software, politics anything at all ) It turned out to be a very nice experience. Especially thanks to "Zombie"
