AWS Marketplace Ubuntu AMI is not compatible with new t2 and m4 instance types

Asked by Francesco

Hello,
the problem is very similar to the one described in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/243921 and in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1280219.

These are the AMI pages:

https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B007Z5YWX4
https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B00JOW8C7S

Please avoid the ping-pong between the answers support tracker and the bug tracket ;-)
Best regards,

Francesco

I would not expect that Ubuntu 10.04 will ever become allowed for the m3.large instance types.
If you look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases you can see, that the support for Ubuntu 10.04 has ended half a year ago.
This implies that there are no more error connections and bug fixes delivered, not even for critical vulnerabilities like those in the news in the past months (heartbleed, shellshock, ...).

I think that you have to consider switching to a supported operating system like Ubuntu 12.04 (support until April 2017), Ubuntu 14.04 (until April 2019), or maybe the future Ubuntu 16.04 (to be published next year).
Both Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 are available on m3.large.

Hi Manfred,
thank you for your answer, but I think there has been some misunderstanding: my question was about the Ubuntu 12.04 AMI, not the 10.04: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B00JOW8C7S
And I know that it's supported on m3.large, I was asking to enable its deployment on the new t2 and m4 instance families (e.g t2.micro, m4.large...) I think Cananonical needs to update just the Markeplace metadata to add those instance types, no need to change the AMI.

Sorry, it seems I overlooked the reference to 12.04. I was focusing on your bug report, and that talks about 10.04.

I do not know how the marketplace information gets updated, but the Ubuntu question area for sure is not the right address.

You could try the AWS support pages, maybe https://aws.amazon.com/support/ or https://forums.aws.amazon.com/

I found a page that lists some specifics about t2 and m4 instance types and which might be relevant in this context:
http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-vpc.html#vpc-only-instance-types

I also encountered the problem reported by Francesco Cambiaso and I think it would be important to see addressed and resolved

Hello, since we have several 12.0.04 old instances we would really appreciate the support also for the new types T2/M4 instances.
