memory stick error

Asked by Geo.Watson

Help would be appreciated.
I have two different memory sticks
 Kingston Technology Company Inc.
Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. Super Flash 1GB / GXT 64MB Flash Drive

I am running ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my two computers.
Both memory sticks used to work on both computers but now they only work on one.
On my laptop now, both memory sticks give the error:-

Invalid uri:'/media/george/"Name of Stick"'given,exiting
No':'in the uri

Neither my user name nor password contains contains any invalid character.

Using 'mesg':-

sudo umount /dev/sdb1
sudo fsck /dev/sdb1

Is it a bit better?

When you want to unplug the device, do you use the safe remove feature in the OS before yanking it out?
