streams won't play in gxine

Asked by fraterchaos

I am unable to get video streams to play in gxine under ubuntu 6.06.

I have upgraded every day, and just got an upgrade package for gxine, and still it won't play streams.

I went to a site called tv4all and clicked on a link to sci-fi movies, it goes to the site in firefox, then opens gxine, and you see the name of the stream flash once on the screen, then it just sits there. If I hit play it flashes the stream name/address again, but still won't play.

What kind of stream is it? What is the link?

I believe that tv4all uses QuickTime files. QuickTime is a non-free format: the creators of the format did not share how the format is made, forcing people to pay licenses fees (or install non-free software) if they want to read it.

The quickest way to enable QuickTime support is by using EasyUbuntu (http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/)

Another quick way is to install realplayer from the Multiverse repository.

--- MunWhile it sounds like a great idea, its not as
EASY as all that

I installed the EasyUbuntu software. I ran it. It asks
what I want to install, then tells me I have to give
permission, but the box it puts on the screen is too
large for my screen resolution, and I can barely enter
my password if I only install a few things at a time,
and CANNOT see the OK button to press it, lukily I was
able to just hit ENTER.

But, it came back with this error message:

W: GPG error: http://packages.freecontrib.org edgy-plf
Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified
because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY
F120156012B83718

So, I guess that's not going to work either.

Ok, I tried running EasyUbuntu again, and it said I
have a bunch of Unauthenticated packaes to install,
which it is doing right now.

I'm assuming I will have to tell it to only install a
few packages at a time, so the window won't be too big
for my screen.

Also, is it always going to give me that error message
because the packages are unauthenticated?

Ok, I went to EasyUbuntu, I downloaded it, and rab it.

As stated earlier, when I tried to install some of the
packages, i got errors.

I also had quite a few packages that failed to
download, the system told me they would not download
either because the packages no longer existed, or
because of my internet connection. I know it wasn't my
connection, ince it downloaded some of the packages
and failed on others.

And after all this, installing all the codecs that it
was able to install, I still cannot watch any streams
from tv4all.com, not with Gxine, not with Totem, not
with gstreamer.

When I first click on a stream, a window opens with a
small screen, which used to display a play button and
progress bar. Now its just a black box with the words
(no video) in the center, with no play button and no
progress bar. This does not seem to be an improvement.

Also, beofre, when I right clicked on the screen in
the browser, it gave me a menu with an option to 'open
with movie player', now there is no menu or anything.

I simply can't understand why it seems like whatever
OS I use, whatever programs I download or install or
even purchase, the things I want most are always the
parts that refuse to work.

Well, waiting on a response. I'm hoping there are some
more things I can try.

I also cannot play Flash videos.

Adobe flash player is installed, but flash videos look
just like the QT and other videos, a blank black
screen with the words (no video) in the center.

Could it be something involving my video card?

I'm using an Nvidia Geforce2 MX 100 card. I downloaded
the Nvidia legacy drivers, and installed the package,
but does that install the drivers and such? If not,
what do I need to do to enable the drivers? Or, should
I be using the non-legacy drivers?

Sorry you're having trouble. The next version of Ubuntu will come with easy codec installation. In the meantime, you can send a letter to tv4all imploring them to support open formats.

Also, you could try Linux Mint, an Ubuntu variant, which includes a variety of non-free codecs, Flash Player, and RealPlayer.

Can you help with this problem?
