SDHC card capacity decreases

Asked by Edmond Condillac

I am not sure if it is the right forum for this query.

I am using 64-bit HP 15 notebook PC, 8 GB memory dual booting Ubuntu 14.04 with Windows 8.1. The capacity of the SDHC 8 GB card appears to have unexpectedly decreased on both OSes after using it to save downloaded image file for the Raspberry Pi operating system. My browser is Internet Explorer 11 for Windows.

SDHC -- Removable Disk: File system NTFS
This SDHC card is an integral ULTIMA PRO make with original capacity 16GB SDHC up to 45 MB/sec
 Since reformatting, it shows Used Space - 2KB ; Free Space - 55.7 MB; Capacity - 55.7MB
Allowed files on drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties.
Windows successfully scanned the drive. No errors found
After reformatting to FAT default, Windows Explorer shows that the contents s follows:
System Volume Information File folder containing 1Hidden, Read-only file held on SDHC disk; folder size on disk 1 KB

Your help with this problem would be most appreciated.

Sounds like you wiped out the partition table when you downloaded the PI image. Try a disk tool like fdisk and create a new partition table, then new partitions, then format. That should restore your missing space.

Thanks for your kind help. Just to confirm, in the Windows 8.1 partition:

1) Insert the SDHC card into the reader
2) Open a CLI
3) cd to the folder containing the SDHC card
4) Then run the command fdisk

Then follow with creating a new partition table, then new partitions, then format.
