not able to boot from cd or usb, not able to load bios! can only boot ubuntu

since I installed Ubuntu 15.04 on a frsh paritiion to work as a dual boot with windows8 I can now only boot to grub and Ubuntu not able to load windows 8 or bios or boot from cd/usb at all

startup loads immediately to grub not able to intervene at all - i.e. esc or F2

I tried to install boot-repair from within Ubuntu but get an error that the files were not found in the repository. tried running Symantec program to refresh the repository but still no joy at all!!

having a nightmare of a time - any help would be appreciated - I have been trawling the forums for a couple of days

If you hold SHIFT at boot up can you select Windows?

What is the first thing you see on the screen when (re-)booting?
There should be some message from the BIOS like "press F2 to enter Bios settings" or similar. Have you tried pressing that key for entering the BIOS setup dialogue? You might also be able to identify the key(s) to press for BIOS setup if you google for your computer's make and model.

If you boot into Ubuntu and issue the following commands, what output do you get:

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo update-grub
sudo fdisk -l
