Subtitles not showing up in totem

I am playing .mkv files in totem which have subtitles. When I go to view >> subtitles and click the ones I want, they dont show up. Do i need to install anything special

Hello Sidarth

Generally,MKV is not a video format, it is a container that can hold several audio/video formats.. MKV files work great in VLC.. VLC has better subtitle support than totem, and MKV is generally used for subtitles..

To Install VLC on ubuntu you need to have multiverse repositories enabled..

Once you are done.. Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo apt-get install vlc

to install vlc
