Dell U3414W screen not turning on

Asked by Leith Bade

I have a Dell XPS 13 9343 with the 4K screen option. I have installed dual boot Ubuntu 15.04 alongside Windows 10.

Today I received a new Dell U3415W monitor which is a large 21:9 monitor with 3440 x 1440 resolution.

My Dell XPS 13 has a mini display port out socket (no HDMI) so I plugged my screen in with the supplied mini display port to full display port cable to the display port in socket on the screen.

After plugging the screen in a message appears on the monitor to say it is entering power save mode (turning off).

In the Screen Display settings option I can now see both the builtin laptop screen and my new Dell monitor.

After enabling the screen in extended screen mode the display remains turned off. However the desktop is extended and I can move my mouse and windows to where the extended screen is, but of course I can't see it.

If I enable mirrored mode the image does appear on the monitor but then I can't select the correct display resolution.

I suspect this may be an Intel display driver bug as while I as playing with the screen settings at one point the builtin laptop screen seemed to lose sync and lots of horizontal lines appeared scrolling up and down the screen.

Where do we go to get Intel to fix the driver?

(Worth noting screen works perfectly in Windows 10)

Some more information, this computer uses the "i915" display driver.

I found these messages in the dmesg log:
[ 308.637781] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

More info the highest resolution setting on the monitor where I get a image (and the screen turns on) is:
2560 x 1080
1560 x 1440

The next resolution up (the native resolution) of 3440 x 1440 does not work.

Does the system have a shortcut key to switch video mode output? If it does, try pressing it a few times.

I tried that actionparsnip. Using that button does not fix it and makes it worse if anything.

This must be a driver bug.

I've exactly the same Problem with this monitor on a Thinkpad X1Carbon 3rd gen

HDMI works fine but on a lower resolution
Display Port works fine @60hz with Win 10

On Ubuntu the same Problem like OP

I got it working after disbaling DP 1.2 in the Monitor OSD (which can only be accessed if screen is not in power safe mode, luckily I've also HDMI Port on the X1)

But it only worked with internal Mini DP, not via Docking Station.

Win10 runs fine also with Docking Station.

So this is still linux driver related I think

Thank you Daniel Schwipreich. I have a Dell U3415W 3440x1440 monitor. I run it over a DP. It only worked after disabling DP 1.2 in the OSD settings. You saved my day!

In case anybody wonders how to temporarily leave the sleep mode, please press ctrl-alt-F1 to enter a text mode. To return to graphical mode, press ctrl-alt-F7.

If you need a browser in text mode, type sudo-apt-get install lynx, use mc to manipulate files, nano to edit them, or less to view in read-only mode. I still needed a laptop (not connected to the monitor) to read this forum on Macintosh, while the Ubuntu machine was in the text mode.
