Unable to dual boot Ubuntu 15.04

Asked by wordsmyth2

I recently downloaded Ubuntu 15.04, hoping it would be an improvement on 14.04, which has given me constant trouble this past twelve months, only to find there is no provision for installing it as a dual boot. Why has this option been deleted? And IS there a way to dual-boot 15.04? PLEASE ADVISE.

You did not say what the other dual boot OS is, so I picked Windows 8.1. There is some way to dual boot 15.04, many have done it. My first thought, have you checked download with MD5sum or SHA256sum? The download may have missed the section you need. Check sites below for information about dual booting Ubuntu 15.04

Thanks for your response, Michael. I wish to dual boot Ubuntu 15.04
with 14.04. Dual boot has been an option in the past, but not so
with 15.04, which leaves me disappointed and annoyed. Is there a
reason for this, and can this be bypassed?

How did you initiate the Ubuntu install? What steps did you take?

Hi AP. I took the usual steps through the Install Menu, only
to find there is no option to install Ubuntu 15.04 as part of a
dual-boot system with Ubuntu 14.04, unlike previous releases
i.e. Ubuntu 12.04 installed alongside Ubuntu 14.04. But this
option has been removed in 15.04 - WHY?

People dual boot quite happily.

What I can suggest is that you remove the current Ubuntu partitions and reinstate the Windows boot loader so that Windows boots on it's own. You can then boot to the 15.04 install media and install to the freed space.

You do realise that 14.04 is only supported until July next year wheras 14.04 is supported til April 2019....

Why upgrade at all?

Have you misunderstood my problem - what's with the Windows stuff?
I wish to dual boot UBUNTU 15.04 with UBUNTU 14.O4 already
installed, but THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR THIS IN THE UBUNTU 15.04
INSTALL MENU, unlike previous releases. So I am still in the dark as
to how this can be accomplished - but thanks again for your response.

What selection options do you see on the 'Installation type' screen http://www.linuxbsdos.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/PartitionOptions-600x379.png ?

I am quite sure that you can use the 'something else' selection to install a second Ubuntu version I parallel to another one that is already installed.

Thanks for your response, Manfred. The 15.04 installation disk has
the usual options, minus "install Ubuntu alongside", so yes: I do
have "something else", but I've no experience with partitions
management. And I'm still puzzled by this 'non improvement' to the
installation process, wondering what prompted Ubuntu to remove the
option that made this process a simple click for the user.

How much RAM do you have?

You could alwys install 14.04 and then in April next year, upgrade directly to 16.04 (LTS to LTS upgrades are supported).

I have 6MB of RAM, but thanks for suggesting I wait for 16.04 -
hadn't realised it would be coming so soon. I've had endless
problems since installing 14.04, usually immediately after
installing an update, and am wondering if it's just not working well
    with my Acer E1-531.

    Thanks again for your advice.
