Ubuntu 14.04 Install Problems on HP 2133

Asked by John Steiert

I'm new to Ubuntu. I've recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my HP 2133 but it doesn't appear to be working correctly.

The system starts up OK and I'm able to login but can't do much else. There aren't too many clues as to what has gone wrong. After I've logged in, the desktop has no icons. AFter logging in, I've managed to create a desktop folder and opening this allows me to navigate around the disk.

I re-ran the install but the situation is the same.

Before logging in there were a number of items in the top right hand corner, but these aren't there after logging in.

Questions:

1) What's likely to be the problem here?

2) Is there an installation log file that can be checked? What should I look for?

It seems to have a VIA Chrome GPU which are far from fun.

Have you tried upgrading in CLI to the latest package versions?

You may want to install xfce4 and use the XFCE session which doesn't require 3D acceleration.

Can you help with this problem?
