No audio input with Ubuntu 14.04 and Intel NUC

I'm trying to record into Audacity in Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC system that has a dual headphone/microphone jack and am not getting any sound.

I've tried altering the settings in Audacity. Then I tried altering the default system sound settings, and wasn't seeing any input level there.

A few things I found after searching that didn't help either:

-Downloaded PulseAudio Volume Control. Didn't see any audio levels there either.

-In the Terminal I entered "alsamixer" and saw that the mic level was turned down there, so I turned it up but it still didn't work.

I've searched around quite a bit now, to no avail, so I thought I'd ask here. Any help is appreciated!

Didn't work. I'm kind of grabbing at straws here.

One thing I did notice is in the PulseAudio Volume Control it indicates that the headphone is plugged in, but when I switch it to input only the input doesn't indicate that anything is plugged in.

So for whatever reason it's just not recognizing it as an input or microphone, and only recognizes it as an output or headphone.

I think I will check Intel's website to see if maybe there's something there. The NUC unit is model NUC5i3RYH.

Turns out the jack is not a straightforward microphone jack, but one intended for a headphone and mic set. A splitter can be bought which splits it into two.
