Ubuntu issues

Asked by gallag66

I have been using Ubuntu 7.10 as a duel boot on a Dell Inspiron 1505. I did this so I could see how I could use it over Windows. I have had it in this configuration for 4 months now and have a few issues that if I could figure out, will then love to complete the change over.

1. Not trying to be stupid, but if I download a file, when I try to open it up, I get a window that basically extracts the file and goes around in circles. Coming from Windows, where it seems to me to be slightly easier, how the heck to I down load?

2. Using Firefox, I get the majority of my news through CNN.com as I am always away. The biggest issue I have is that I cannot run, look at, view, any of the live feeds, nor can I view any of the Video. Also, some sites do not show everything, and I mean things look blacked out, or shatterd.

Other than this, I am having a blast with Ubuntu, just find it frustrating on these 2 issues to finish the change

gallag66,

For the firefox issue, please install the following:
mozilla-mplayer and flashplugin-nonfree

Fire up a Terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type the following commands:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree mozilla-mplayer
About the live feeds, take a look at the following link:
http://johnbokma.com/firefox/rss-and-live-bookmarks.html

Regarding your file download, can you give us some details about the type of the file (Extension).

With Regards,
Zombie.

Thank you for the information. I installed both. Now I get a separate window for the Video, but it still will not play or show. Also the flash still looks shattered.

The issue I had was not trying to display on an external device nor my lap-top display. Just certain things would not work on the Firefox. Solved the issue by going to the Adobe website, and loading Adobe Flash for Linux. Guess what, everything works now.
