After upgrade rom 14.10 to 15.04 system does not start

Asked by ealthuis

A few days ago I upgraded two systems from 14.10 to 15.04. One works fine, the other most of the time will not start. I have to shut down and restart the computer, then I get this message:

[0. 639791] ACPI Probe failed
starting version 219

Sometimes the system starts, others it shows a lot of messages, including "systemdctl-reboot"

When entering that command, I get an invalid command message.

I power the system down and restart it and some of the time it starts correctly such as now, it is running properly.

After the POST, I get a grub screen with Ubuntu on the top (the default) and other lines below including one about 14.04-1, I tried to start that but that did not work either.

Have you tested your RAM using Memtest from Grub?

The lines

[timecode] ACPI PPC Probe failed
starting version 219

are perfectly normal and indicate that some specific steps during the boot process went ok. They do not indicate an error.

You could look in the system log files (directory /var/log, file names e.g. syslog, syslog.1, kern.log, kern.log.1) for hints what goes wrong during these failed boot attempts.
