dual OS with Windows 7 & UBUNTU 14.04 LTS boot option menu missing

Asked by Muraleedharan P Nair

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit) with 29 GB partition on a Windows 7 PC as dual OS which have 160 GB HDD, 4GB RAM & Intel Core i5-3330 CPU @ 3.00GHz × 4 Processor. After installing the Ubuntu the dual boot option menu does not appear and the system boot directly to ubuntu. How can I retain both the OS in my PC

Replying to the automated email and attaching an image doesn't work. Copy the text and paste as an update on

It is seen. If you hold SHIFT at boot, do you see Windows?

Open a terminal and issue the command

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

This should ask for your password as confirmation of an administrative action and then will open an editor with the grub configuration file loaded.

Scroll down about five or six lines and add/remove '#' characters at the beginning of the next lines that it looks similar to this:

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTION=...
etc.

Then save the file and close the editor.

As a last step re-issue the command
sudo update-grub
