Asked by Chris

I have been able to install the software using Wine, but when I run the installation program it won't detect the wireless adapter - does anyone have a solution?

You don't need WINE. You need a driver for Linux to make the adapter work.

What is the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; lsusb

Thanks

According to the following links, there is no native wireless driver for your wireless USB adapter:

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_A6200

http://askubuntu.com/questions/460277/how-to-get-netgear-a6200-to-work-on-14-04

Wireless USB adapters are dirt-cheap.

So I suggest selling your Netgear A6200 and getting a replacement that works out-of-the-box in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Mark,
Thanks for your response. I followed your suggestion and replaced the
Netgear A6200 wireless adapter with an Asus USB N13 Wireless-N300 Adaoter
which is supposed to be Ubuntu 14.04 ready. Following the instructions I
inserted the disk and followed the instructions to install; at the end of
installation I got the message - Error 0x80040154: Couldn't the get notify
object interface. (I typed this verbatim and did not transpose words) The
next step is to select finish - done - and a leftover install window from
Netgear pops up and I can't get rid of it (I moved all of that program to
trash and then emptied the trash - is there a way to uninstall/remove
programs like windows?) The computer reboots and desktop opens with the
only program I've loaded - Asus N-13 Control Center - and when I try to
open it I get the message: The program RtWLan has encountered a serious
problem and needs to close. This may be caused by a program deficiency in
WINE. You may want to check the application database for tips about running
this application. I am completely lost!
Your help would be appreciated, but I understand that this may be very
involved and may require too much of your time.
A little background; my son recommended installing Ubuntu to replace
Windows XP due to no more support from Microsoft. I am not computer savvy
but I can do most of the things I need to in the different versions of
Windows. I am completely new to Ubuntu (Linux) and my son does not have
much more understanding than I do.
Thank you,
Chris

When I wrote "replacement that works out-of-the-box", I meant a wireless USB adapter that works immediately in Ubuntu WITHOUT having to install any drivers at all. If it works out-of-the-box, Ubuntu should immediately recognize and start using the wireless USB adapter. Did you try looking for wireless access points in Ubuntu using the Asus USB N13 Wireless-N300 Adapter ?

I suspect you tried to install wireless drivers from Windows in Ubuntu. This will not work. Ubuntu is a totally different operating system. Using wine to install wireless drivers will not work either.

I suggest creating a new question about the Asus USB N13 Wireless-N300 Adapter using the following link:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Set the current thread to 'solved', because this thread was about the netgear A6200 ac wireless adapter.

I also recommend learning more about Ubuntu and GNU/Linux using these guides:
