"I can't log on with my username and password."

You forgot them or it just don't work?

You can change your password via Recovery mode (by default second choise in grub). Recovery mode will login you automatically as root (in text mode), then just use command "passwd username" (without quotation marks, username = your user name) to change your password.

Thanks for your reply, the problem is I was away for 4 months and I can't log on to Ubuntu. I believe I'm using the correct username and password but it doesn't work. I am willing to concede the I forgot both, so I thought if I reinstall its easer but I'm not too computer literate. ( not from generation X....I still remember using a typewriter and having no cell phone, and using Morse code. I'm willing to learn) Thanks

So boot to recovery mode.

Use command "ls /home" -- it will show you content of folder /home -- there is home folder of your user (so it's your username).

Password -- look a my forgoing answer.

Sorry but I don't understand your problem now... "root@ubuntua28510:~#" is OK -- you are logged as root, so just use commands I wrote above...

I'm sorry, I'm having trouble putting in the information in the recovery mode. The last line I get is:"root@ubuntua28510:~#". When I type in any other information I get the same answer "root@ubuntua28510:~#". There is no prompt for username. I don't remember my user name or its not taking the one I thought was my use name. I prefer to reformat the drive and reinstall but I don't know how. Thanks.

Type "cat /etc/passwd | less" and try to find your user name in the list (the first words in the lines).

If it doesn't help, maybe you should add a new user:

erictdavid,

Boot ubuntu using recovery mode,
Use the following command to add a user to your system:
useradd -m username
passwd username.

Reboot. After logging in use System > Administration > Users and Groups and set the User Previlages in the Properties tab.

With Regards,
Zombie.
