There seems to be some misunderstanding. You have to BOOT into Ubuntu, you cannot start the (X)Ubuntu operating system from inside a terminal.

Please provide more information about your system:
What hardware, what other operating systems, etc.
When you switch on the system, what happens, what do you see on screen?
If you type the commands
uname -a
lsb_release -crid
in a terminal window, what output do you get?

Why are you running xfce as root!? It is massively unsecured and not advised at all.

If you install a desktop manager like xdm or lightdm, you can use a graphical login and the system will work as you expect.

Can you help with this problem?
