Daemon fails when I attempt to run Upadate Manager.

Asked by Ed Raicevic

I am trying to run update manager on my system (12.04 LTS) and when I click 'Install Updates' I get the following error message:

"Task cannot be monitored or controlled. The connection to the daemon was lost. Most likely, the background daemon crashed."

I have tried rebooting several times with no change. What do I do now?

Andrew - Since my last update several things have happened.

Firstly, the original problem with Update Manager appears to have been solved. I have started U.M. manually and it worked. All updates were installed successfully. The commands you provided (sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get --reinstall install nano) appear to have cleared the problem.

Next, my system started to issue other error messages with other background elements that were failing. I reported the problems (as requested in the pop up window) and my system continued functioning. This was repeated several times.

Finally, I reran sudo apt-get update in the hope that it would help clear what appeared to be the beginning of a new set of problems. When it finished running, U.M. started again and it downloaded a new version of the Linux kernel and all its associated elements (successfully). I rebooted as requested and I am now running fine (no other error messages of any kind)

I would say that this is problem solved. What's your opinion?

Regards.... Ed Raicevic
