After Changing Cable Companies, Can't Connect Ubuntu 12.04, LXLE to the Internet

Asked by Ali S.

I hope someone here can help me to reestablish my internet service. I switched my OS from Windows XP, in April 2014, to Ubuntu 12.04, LXLE. The wireless cable worked very well from the start. I moved two weeks ago and had to switch internet providers. The technicians were unable to establish any kind of connection for me ("We do not support Linux!"). I think I am close, because there is data going back and forth via a wired connection. I may be just too inexperienced to see anything obvious. I understand that this may be a DNS problem, but I cannot solve it.

This is my output (copied from what I saw others provide for similar problems):

I was never able to copy the MAC address from the bottom of the router the cable company gave me into the space provided in Network Manager. The alphanumeric code on the router is different from the address (HWaddr 00:11:0a:95:a5:d7) already assigned. I cannot change it. I was curious too about nameserver 2001:558:feed::1, nameserver 2001:558:feed::2, and if that was straight.

I hope my problems are due to my inexperience, and that someone here can spot what is wrong for me.

Very appreciatively,

Alice

BTW, "wireless cable" makes no sense. You are using a wired connection. Not wireless.

Also too, I found discrepancies here:

System Profiler data is very different from Connection Information in Network Manager:

ARP Table System Information:

IP Address MAC Address Interface

192.168.1.1 e8:fc:af:94:8b:db* ethO

Connection Information:

Interface: Ethernet (ethO)
Hardware Address: 00:11:0A:95:A5:D7
Driver: tg3
Security: None

IP Address 192.168.1.2
Broadcast Address 192.168.1.255
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Route 192.168.1.1

IPv6

*This MAC address corresponds exactly to the sticker on the router, but “Edit Connections” in Network Manager will not accept it --the above Hardware Address 00:11:0A:95:A5:D7, is already there. I was never able to enter the MAC address on the bottom of the router with Network Manager. The "save" button would gray out whenever I tried. In its place was hardware address: 00:11:0A:95:A5:D7.

I phrased it poorly with "wireless cable." I conflated the hardware with the ISP, or cable company, and stumbled over my thoughts. There is no wireless connection whatsoever since the technicians from the new cable company activated my account. I did have a wireless connection with my prior cable company, but there seems to be no means at all to connect wirelessly through this new ISP. There is, via an ethernet cable, some data exchange, but I cannot load any web pages. I would like to establish a working wired (cable) connection here, but the technicians were unable to assist.

Thank you

Try:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Do you now have web access?

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Amazing.

Thank you so much.

Is there anything else you suggest I do at this point, or am I good to go?

That change doesn't survive reboots as the file is generated. You will need to run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee -a /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head > /dev/null

It will now get added each boot. That adds a DNS server for name resolution to IP addresses. This was your issue. The command I gave simply tested this fact. You can ping 8.8.8.8 as this is an IP so doesn't need DNS to work.
