Ubuntu 14.04 LTS not installing

Asked by Kaveesh

I use DELL Inspiron Laptop having Intel Core i5 1st gen, 4 GB RAM and 1 GB graphics memory, 500 GB HDD. I used ubuntu 12.04 LTS successfully on my machine but this new version 14.04 LTS is not installing on it. When I boot from my USB disk having Ubuntu 14.04 it first displays choice of language then various options like Try ubuntu, Install Ubuntu, Check disk defects etc. When I click on Install , screen just goes black and my system shuts down. Also it ince corrupted my windows 7 boot file also. Please suggest me solution.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you put on the USB?

Doesn't matter where it comes from. You are downloading data from the most unreliable network (The Internet). TCP does a good job at catching bad packets and re-requesting them but it is not perfect. MD5 lets you check the data you have downloaded so you KNOW it is good.

You could download the ISO from the dodgeyesty warez website you can find but as long as the MD5 hash matches then the file is pristine.

What happens if you boot from the installation kit and then select 'Try Ubuntu without installing'? Does that work?

If that is working well, you can try using the desktop icon to create an installation on your hard disk (unless this fails also).

You write about windows 7. Do you have already a windows 7 installation on the hard disk where you want to install Ubuntu? Do you want to replace Windows by Ubuntu, or do you want to install side-by-side?
Have you already created free space for the Ubuntu partitions?

'Try ubuntu without installing' also does not work, just a black screen comes and computer freezes.I have to hit poweroff button to restart it.

I want to replace windows 7, I did not created any separate partition, just simply installed it(12.04 LTS 64bit) the way in which we normally install Windows by booting from USB disk. It worked very fine but this is not. Also I ran my 14.04 iso on virtualbox and it ran smoothly which suggests ISO is totally correct and not corrupted.
