Asked by Dipankar Adhya

Sirs, I have purchased Dell Ins 3542/Ci3/4GB/500GB/Ubu/15.6" laptop on 29.06.2015 and after receipt on 01.07.2015 after installing the pre installed OS Ubantu 12.04 ( I don't remember whether it was Ubantu 12.04.5 ) when it prompted whether I want to upgrade to Ubantu14.4 . I opted "Yes" and it started upgrading . If I remember correctly, after two or three steps on 3rd or on 4th step it got hanged. As I did not had an alternative, I switched off the laptop. Now while opening I find on opening page after giving passward ( which was given while installation ) it is reverting back to same log in page. It is happing also while trying to log in as guest. Please

Drop to TTY1 and make sure you are the owner of your home folder with:

sudo chown $USER:$USER $HOME

You don't need to change the command. You can then run:

sudo reboot

and reboot the system. HTH

Even after 1.pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 at login page - no change . 2. given passward and enter - no change ( it is coming back to login page )

3. Tried with pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 immediately after starting( switching on ) - no change. 4. Given passward and enter - no change ( it is coming back to lioin page )

No scope to type command.

Hold SHIFT at boot and select the Memtest86 from Grub. Is the memory OK?

If you see red in the display then some or all RAM is bad

Thanks a lot. Holding the shift key at boot enable me to get the commend screen and opting for factory reset solved the problem. Regards, Dipankar
