Please check, if the selected device is the correct one in Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O -> Playback Device.

Be sure your user is included into audio group...

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo adduser your_user_name audio

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Please replace "your_user_name" with your real Ubuntu user name

Hope this helps

moth@pearl-desktop:~$ sudo adduser moth@pearl-desktop audio
[sudo] password for moth:
adduser: The user `moth@pearl-desktop' does not exist.
moth@pearl-desktop:~$ sudo adduser moth audio
The user `moth' is already a member of `audio'.
moth@pearl-desktop:~$

didnt do it thanks again people =]

Maybe "sudo dpkg-reconfigure audacity", then look again the possible playback devices. Try that, what you normally use in other players. (And if that's not good, all the others :-)
(And please give us the model of your sound card, and the possibilities in audacity and in other, working players/volume control.)

By the way, does recording in Audacity works well?

moth@pearl-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure audacity
[sudo] password for moth:
moth@pearl-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure audacity
moth@pearl-desktop:~$

well that didnt seem to do much either

thanks again for the thought im really stumped. i went to bed after

pulling

up a vinyl track and listened to it a couple times the next

morning after i updated my system it wouldnt

recognize the file was there..... it would open , but wouldnt display any thing .i have adjusted the inputs at

times in

the past yet i hadnt and rebooted linux and reloaded and still the same thing.

 im using the beta because

although

audacity will mount lame in the 1.2.6. it will not produce an option for mp3 export unless you use 1.3.4

so any other thought would help . i do have a sound card i can add and if nothing else i can try that i dont

see how everything else will function though??

my sound card is intigrated and i have been using the web to watch dvd and listening to music as well as

other programs are funtioning.audacity is opening really slow to so im not sure what to think. the "beta" has

been out for some time and i hate to think its a bug. so yes i would love to use audacity some more for

recording it works great when it wants too. oh my play back options at this point are

oss

alsa intel

,front

,default,

mix

jack alsa pcm

the audio card i can install which means rebooting and either removing my 5 port usb or video

i believe is made by nec it has 2 audio outputs and a 15 pin connector

as well as a mike line and extra audio input it has the ess solo 1 pro-chip

I am getting the same issue here, but with Hardy Heron...I've checked all the settings, and they supposedly match up (same input/output, both set for ALSA (default).

If I load up JACK, it works, kind of? but a terrible recording (crackly, scratchy), so not a viable option. I think it's some sort of bug, but I don't know...
