Problem installing 6.10 on Sharp P4 laptop

Asked by Bill McKenna

I have made three attempts to install on Sharp P4 laptop using the DVD supplied with book (something like Official Ubuntu by Ubuntu community experts) vers. 6.10. I selected Default installation which got stuck setting timezone (1st pop-up window did not appear when set-time button pressed and window frozen then after rebooting, the window popped up but froze with timer icon on). I then tried the safe graphical installation and this got further but froze during hard-drive partitioning - just sat there fat dumb and happy with the timer icon spinning.

I had previously installed a very old SuSe as a full-disk installation to test that the laptop was functional as it had lost it's boot-sector and I didn't have the restore CDs. SuSe loaded OK but did not recognise the wireless (expected) and the keyboard mapping was a bit off but otherwise seemed fine. Should I have reformatted before installing Ubuntu maybe? I'll try this tonight but if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know - I'm pretty much a Linux freshy but have used unix in previous lives.

Try installing using the "Alternate Install CD" instead of the LiveCD.

Do you know if this is on the DVD provided with the Official Ubuntu book and if so which menu option it is? (It's mentioned in the book but the menu option of the install DVD does not refer to Alternate Install)

Although i have not actually got the book myself i assume you need to download a separate image for the alternate install (it wont be provided on the DVD). It would help if you provided the spec's of your laptop (specifically the ram, liveCD installs don't work well with less than 256mb).

Try the alternate install then create a new ticket if it does not work properly, next time it would help if you provided more information about your machine.

Thanks I'll try it and be sure to include more machine details in future - I just don't have them available right now. The DVD purports to contain all the versions available online, it's just that the names in the menu are different.
