Hey Manfred, I am back again.
You asked me to redescribe what happens by booting the laptop.

1 First comes de HP start-up page.

2 Then I have the screen is divided in three parts:

2a the bottom part:
shows seven lines:
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-84-generic-pae
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-84-generic-pae (recovery)
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-84-generic-pae
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-84-generic-pae (recovery)
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-80-generic-pae
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-80-generic-pae (recovery)
Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. Kernel 3.2.0-79- generic-pae
when I select “Unbuntu 12.04.5 LTS. kernel 3.2.0-84generic-pae” the laptop boots in Ubuntu. No further problem but I think this is the older version.

2b the middle part:
when I select “ When you have verified Grub 2 you can use command to complete the upgrade: upgrade from grub legacy.”
I get: “Error 11 recognized device string.”

2c the top part: “Chainboard into Grub2.”
When I select this, I get the purple screen with the possibility’s :
Ubuntu, met Linux 3.2.0-86-generic-pae
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-86-generic-pae (recovery mode)
Previous Linux versions
Memory test (memtest 86+)
Memory test (memtest 86+, serial console 115200)
Windows Vista (loader) (on/dev/sda1)
Windows Vista (loader) (on/dev/sda2)

2d When I select “Ubuntu, met Linux 3.2.0-86-generic-pae”, I get a screen without any text.
It is divided in 4 parts:
Purple space – green line – black space – white line – purple space – green line – black space
This screen lasts for about 30 seconds. Then Ubuntu boots.

I hope this is clear to you?

My question 266869 was not fully answered, but due to a period that I was not able to go online, the link was ended by Ubuntu. Please reconnect me with Manfred Hampl. Thanks.

Apparently this is a continuation to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/266869

Ok, this is now clearer to me.

I suggest that you reboot your system,
select "chainload into grub 2"
on the next screen select "Ubuntu, met Linux 3.2.0-86-generic-pae"
then most probably the 30 seconds of colored screen will be shown, and finally Ubuntu should boot.

log in and open a terminal

issue the commands
uname -a
cat /etc/fstab
sudo blkid
mount
sudo fdisk -l

and copy/paste all output into this question document.

In my opinion it is time to try upgrading grub to the current version.

Boot the same ways as last time (chainload into grub2, then select "Ubuntu, met Linux 3.2.0-86-generic-pae").
Log in, open a terminal windows and issue the command

sudo upgrade-from-grub-legacy

When you are asked where to install the boot loader, select the hard disk /dev/sda

Then issue the command

sudo update-grub

and copy/paste all output back into the question document.

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/268822

    Status: Open => Answered

Manfred Hampl proposed the following answer:
In my opinion it is time to try upgrading grub to the current version.

Boot the same ways as last time (chainload into grub2, then select "Ubuntu, met Linux 3.2.0-86-generic-pae").
Log in, open a terminal windows and issue the command

sudo upgrade-from-grub-legacy

When you are asked where to install the boot loader, select the hard
disk /dev/sda

Then issue the command

sudo update-grub

and copy/paste all output back into the question document.

Oh, no, something went wrong, and now the system does no more boot as it should. Sorry, for that.
To repair that you need an Ubuntu boor disk or bootable USB stick.
You have to boot from an Ubuntu installation kit and re-install the grub boot-loader.
Do you have an Ubuntu installation CD/DVD or a bootable USB stick to install Ubuntu (the version does not really matter)?

Before going into details, general questions:
Does you computer (the one with the broken Ubuntu system) have a CD/DVD drive?
Is that computer able to boot from USB devices?
Do you want to try booting from a CD/DVD or want to use a USB stick?

On which computer do you try creating the USB stick? What Operating System does that have? How and where did you get the screen contents that you described in your last message?

The broken laptop has CD/DVD and USB drivers.
I donn't know if the bios is installed for USB or CDD/DVD.
The other computer has also CD/DVD and USB and is running in Ubuntu 12.4
I typed in "snelzoeker start" "USB"and got "opstartschijf maker" icon.
When it opens , it shows the window "maak een opstartschijf".
The other info I wrote you in de last mail.
As I reread my mail I see that it was not via "terminal" but via "snelzoeker start", I got the info als written above. Sorry for that.

You have to create a DVD to re-boot the broken Ubuntu system, or create a bootable USB stick for that purpose.

See http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu for converting an USB stick into a bootable medium (note: all data on the stick will get lost)

OR

I just tried this on my Ubuntu 12.04 test system and it does not ask me to upgrade.

Did you already download the Ubuntu installation kit?

If you have already downloaded installation .iso file, where have you put it?

If you have not yet downloaded it, I recommend that you download http://ftp.belnet.be/ubuntu.com/ubuntu/releases/12.04.5/ubuntu-12.04.5-desktop-i386.iso and save it in your Downloads folder.

Then you restart "opstartschijf maken" and select in the upper box the file ubuntu-12.04.5-desktop-i386.iso in the Downloads folder (or wherever you have put the .iso file), and proceed.

Do you have a USB stick that can be used for the purpose of creating a boot stick? You have to be aware that all data that currently are there on it will be deleted.

Use the startupdisccreator program to put the .iso file on it (you have to use this program, a plain copy of the file does not work).

start startupdiskcreator (I guess in Vlaams it is "opstartschijf maken")
in the upper part of the window you have to press on the 'overige' button and in the window that opens navigate (doubleclick) to 'Desktop' (Bureayblad ?) and then select the .iso file that you just downloaded.

in the lower part you have to select the USB stick.

Just see the images on http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu

sorry you seem to have made it already, you can ignore my previous message.

Now use 'unmount' or 'eject' to remove the USB stick, and plug it into the broken computer

restart the broken computer and press the button to start the BIOS setup dialogue.
Select that the computer boots from USB devices first.

Does the broken computer boot from the USB stck into Ubuntu?
Then it should ask for language, and then you should have two possibilities
Install Ubunto
or
Test Ubuntu without installing.

You have to select 'Test Ubuntu without installing'

And then use the commands as shown in http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/09/live-usb-sticking-grub-2-video

I assume you have to use /dev/sda1 where the omg Ubunut guide shows /dev/sda5

CD/DVD
Notebook Hard Drive
USB Diskette on Key
USB Hard Drive
Network Adapter.
Wich one is it? Or is it some very different?

And the video - I am not involved in that video at all, and I am sorry to say that the lovely girl is not my assistant!

If you can live with those 30 seconds of strangely colored screen, you most probably better leave it as it is.

One additional remark:
You have 45 versions of the kernel image packages installed. I would be reasonable to do some cleanup there, by removing all except the newest two or three.

It is not a must to do cleanup.
You have to be aware that periodically (about once a month) a new version of the kernel image packages is installed, with about 40 MB size. I do not know the free capacity of you hard disk(s), but just a rough calculation shows that you have 1.5 GB space that is occupied by obsolete versions of the kernel image packages, and over the course of each year another 300 MB will be used.

If you do not have space problems, you can of course also leave it as it is.

Just to verify, what is the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
df -h
df -i
dpkg -l | egrep ' linux-[hi]'

Your question #268822 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/268822

    Status: Open => Needs information

Manfred Hampl requested more information:
It is not a must to do cleanup.
You have to be aware that periodically (about once a month) a new version of the kernel image packages is installed, with about 40 MB size. I do not know the free capacity of you hard disk(s), but just a rough calculation shows that you have 1.5 GB space that is occupied by obsolete versions of the kernel image packages, and over the course of each year another 300 MB will be used.

If you do not have space problems, you can of course also leave it as it
is.

Just to verify, what is the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
df -h
df -i
dpkg -l | egrep ' linux-[hi]'

The output confirms that there is no space problem. It is your decision whether you want to do cleanup by purging obsolete kernel packages or not.

Although it mostly is hocus pocus for me, I like working with the computer this way in the hope it will give me some understanding in the end.
So please guide me to remove the super plus of old kernels packages.

The current kernel package has the version number 3.2.0-87
I recommend that you remove all kernels with numbers below 3.2.0-80

The commands

apt-get --simulate purge 'linux-headers-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'
apt-get --simulate purge 'linux-image-2\.6\..*'
apt-get --simulate purge 'linux-image-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'

should simulate the removal of the obsolete kernel header packages (necessary for compiling kernel modules for the related kernel version) and the outdated kernel images packages.

Please execute these commands (they will just run in simulation mode and will just tell what they would do) and copy/paste the output back into the question document that we can verify that the commands really do what I expect. If the output is ok, then I will tell you how to do real execution.

Onderwerp: Re: [Question #268822]: Please reopen question 266869

Your question #268822 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/268822

    Status: Open => Answered

Manfred Hampl proposed the following answer:
The current kernel package has the version number 3.2.0-87
I recommend that you remove all kernels with numbers below 3.2.0-80

The commands

apt-get --simulate purge 'linux-headers-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'
apt-get --simulate purge 'linux-image-2\.6\..*'
apt-get --simulate purge 'linux-image-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'

should simulate the removal of the obsolete kernel header packages
(necessary for compiling kernel modules for the related kernel version)
and the outdated kernel images packages.

Please execute these commands (they will just run in simulation mode and
will just tell what they would do) and copy/paste the output back into
the question document that we can verify that the commands really do
what I expect. If the output is ok, then I will tell you how to do real
execution.

The simulation looks good, you can try the real execution with the commands

sudo apt-get purge 'linux-headers-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'
sudo apt-get purge 'linux-image-2\.6\..*'
sudo apt-get purge 'linux-image-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'

Be prepared that the removal of all those packages will take quite a while.

Afterwards re-issue the commands

df -h
df -i
dpkg -l | egrep ' linux-[hi]'

and post the output, that it is possible to verify the results.

Your question #268822 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/268822

    Status: Open => Answered

Manfred Hampl proposed the following answer:
The simulation looks good, you can try the real execution with the
commands

sudo apt-get purge 'linux-headers-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'
sudo apt-get purge 'linux-image-2\.6\..*'
sudo apt-get purge 'linux-image-3\.2\.0-[2-7].*'

Be prepared that the removal of all those packages will take quite a
while.

Afterwards re-issue the commands

df -h
df -i
dpkg -l | egrep ' linux-[hi]'

and post the output, that it is possible to verify the results.

This now looks good.
By removing obsolete kernel packages the free space went

i.e 10 GB data in 1.3 million files have been deleted.

I do not see anything wrong with your system. If the system is working well for you (apart from the strange-colored screen when booting), you might set this question document to closed.

If you still see a problem, please tell us and we will be glad to help.

Thank you again for the fantastic help with my computer.
Everything works as it should, I think, so the question can be closed. However I have still two other problems: one with a printer driver and one with de All Video Downloader (from the Ubuntu Software Centre).
Some time ago I bought a new laser printer: Samsung Xpress M2022W. I looked for a printer driver and found in SamsungPrinterinstaller.tar.gz a map uld.
It has beside 3 maps:
i386
noarch and
x86_64;
there are three install files.

1. Install.sh

SCRIPTS_DIR=$(dirname "$0")/noarch

# load 'scripting' run-time support utility functions
. "${SCRIPTS_DIR}/scripting_utils"
script_log_init $(basename "$0" ".sh")

# load 'package' run-time support utility functions
. "${SCRIPTS_DIR}/package_utils"
environment_init $(basename "$0" ".sh")

if sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/pre_install.sh" "$@" ; then
 if sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/package_install.sh" "printer-meta" ; then
  # CUPS - OK
  sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/package_install.sh" "scanner-meta"
 else
  # CUPS - NG
show_nls_message_no_nl "**** Do you want to continue to install scan driver ? [y/n] : "
  if [ -z "${CONTINUE_INSTALL}" ] ; then
   read CONTINUE_INSTALL
  fi
  if [ "y" = "${CONTINUE_INSTALL}" ] || [ "Y" = "${CONTINUE_INSTALL}" ] ; then
   sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/package_install.sh" "scanner-meta"
  fi
 fi
 sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/post_install.sh" "$@"
fi

2. install-printer.sh

#!/bin/sh

SCRIPTS_DIR=$(dirname "$0")/noarch

# load 'scripting' run-time support utility functions
. "${SCRIPTS_DIR}/scripting_utils"
script_log_init $(basename "$0" ".sh")

# load 'package' run-time support utility functions
. "${SCRIPTS_DIR}/package_utils"
environment_init $(basename "$0" ".sh")

if sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/pre_install.sh" "$@" ; then
 sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/package_install.sh" "printer-meta"
 sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/post_install.sh" "$@"
fi

3. install-scanner.sh
#!/bin/sh

SCRIPTS_DIR=$(dirname "$0")/noarch

# load 'scripting' run-time support utility functions
. "${SCRIPTS_DIR}/scripting_utils"
script_log_init $(basename "$0" ".sh")

# load 'package' run-time support utility functions
. "${SCRIPTS_DIR}/package_utils"
environment_init $(basename "$0" ".sh")

if sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/pre_install.sh" "$@" ; then
 sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/package_install.sh" "scanner-meta"
 sh "$SCRIPTS_DIR/post_install.sh" "$@"
fi

Can I do something with this?

As far as I know you should execute

In which directory did you unpack the Samsung driver tar file?
You have to cd (change directory) into that directory and then issue the sudo ./install.sh command.

The SamsungPrinterinstaller was on the desktop. This didn't work (I told you in de mail)
I moved it into:
Documents and Documenten: without succes.
It seems to me there are no better options? I have:
Afbeeldingen, Music, Muziek, Openbaar, opt, Pictures Sjablonen, Video's and Ubuntu One (but I think the last one can be deleted, since Ubuntu One doesn't work anymore?)

Open a terminal window (e.g. by pressing ctrl-alt-t)
issue the "change directory" command to switch to the directory where that file is stored, something like

cd Documenten

check with the command
ls
that the downloaded file with name SamsungPrinterInstaller.tar.gz is really there, if not then cd to the directory where you have stored that file.

Issue the command for unpacking the zipped installer package

tar xzvf SamsungPrinterInstaller.tar.gz

This will create a new directory named uld in your current directory and will unpack all files there.

Change directoty ioto that "uld" directory with the command

cd uld

start the installer with the command

sudo ./install.sh

If there is anything that des not work as expected please provide the details (if possible including full text of the command that you gave and the error message that you got).

Your question #268822 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/268822

    Status: Open => Answered

Manfred Hampl proposed the following answer:
Open a terminal window (e.g. by pressing ctrl-alt-t)
issue the "change directory" command to switch to the directory where that file is stored, something like

cd Documenten

check with the command
ls
that the downloaded file with name SamsungPrinterInstaller.tar.gz is really there, if not then cd to the directory where you have stored that file.

Issue the command for unpacking the zipped installer package

tar xzvf SamsungPrinterInstaller.tar.gz

This will create a new directory named uld in your current directory and
will unpack all files there.

Change directoty ioto that "uld" directory with the command

cd uld

start the installer with the command

sudo ./install.sh

If there is anything that des not work as expected please provide the
details (if possible including full text of the command that you gave
and the error message that you got).

If you look at the last lines

**** Print driver has been installed successfully. ...
**** Scan driver has been installed successfully. ...
**** Install finished.

this gives the confirmation that the driver package was correctly installed.

Now try opening a browser window on http://localhost:631
and use the cups configuration pages to create a printer queue for your Samsung Xpress M2022W printer.

I assume that you have to select something like "Samsung_M2020_Series" or similar as the printer type.

When I open “localhost 631” I get CUPS 1.5.3
I tried in “Cups for Administrators” “Find Printer Drivers” result: 404 Not Pound.

I tried in “Administration” “Printers” “Add Printer” on the screen: “http://localhost:631 vraagt om een gebruiksnaam en wachtwoord. De website meldt:'CUPS' but then I am asked for a user name and a password. Do I have to create this, and is so where?
If they ask for the user name of the laptop, a have another problem, because I only know the password.

I tried “Find New Printers” “Available Printers” “No printers found”

“Manage Printers” gives the name of the current printer (HP Deskjet)

It is good to see that you have been able to solve your printer problem.
I recommend that you set this question to 'solved'. In case that you run into another problem, please open a new question document. In my opinion it does not make any sense to put another problem into this question document, because each question should be related to one single topic.
