problem install 6.06 and 6.10 in AMD 64

Asked by Derek Bollam

Hi,

I have a new computer with Athlon AMD 64.
Neither Ubuntu 6.06 or 6.10 are happy to install there and I have a suspicion that I have to treat them in a different way.
Advice please.
Derek

Hi,

Not sure what details you need.
The computer has an Athlon AMD 64 CPU 3000
I attempted to install in the normal way from a Ubuntu CD for the 6.06 version and from a downloaded version of 6.10.
I cannot remember exactly what happened but it was obvious that it was not happy in both cases.
I went back to my older AMD 32 CPU 2000 and they both installed without trouble.
The 6.10 did give some trouble later but that was not the main problem.

It would be a lot more helpful if you include specific information such as:
1. What is the model of your motherboard?
2. How much RAM is installed?
3. What is the model of your video card (if not onboard)?
4. What is the model of your sound card (if not onboard)?
5. Please attach output of the command lspci

Did you download/order the AMD 64 version of Ubuntu?

No, I did not even know there was such an animal. I think you may have
solved the problem.
Can I assume that I should get an AMD 64 version of 6.10 and try again?

Yes, the image for the 64 bit architecture is available at: http://se.releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-amd64.iso (direct download link)
