General error mounting file systems

So something has happened and I can't get past the black screen with white text - I can get into recovery menu but nothing is working. I have the live cd but can't boot it from any menu I can see

Toshiba laptop - win 8 replaced with ububtu

Solved by booting the laptop into the HHD menu and loading cdrom first - means a fresh install but that's OK
