Launchpad Reputation System

Asked by Vitor

Couldn't we have a package or PPA reputation system?
In Arch we have AUR, which has a lot o packages and you can just look for one and choose the best based on user's votes.
On Ubuntu, when we want to install more software, we have to Google it and trust some PPA.
I guess Ubuntu is the distro with the larger number of packages, but it's not so easy to find the one that's the best for your needs. Including the option to vote would make it perfect!

You don't have to Google it. Launchpad has a PPA search engine
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=firefox

For example.

AUR is exactly the same as PPA. Some guy online compiles a package and makes a PPA. The fact that others can use them is a byproduct. It comes with exactly the same caveats as AUR.

Fisrt, thanks for answering!
I know there's a search engine, but the results don't include votes or any reputation, it's hard to choose the right package among so many. Give it a look:

AUR Search: http://i.imgur.com/UgF6bhE.png --- A lot of search options, and a nice "Votes" ranking.

Launchpad Search: http://i.imgur.com/73xOyNl.png --- No search options at all.

It is a very useful tool, that's missing in the Ubuntu package ecosystem.

If you actually used the link I gave, you can see that you can search for packages there.......

The voting system is fine but thats the only difference I can. You can filter each PPA on tehe PPA page for the release you use to see if it supports the one you use. I gues this could be added to the initial search page.

You could report a bug with Launchpad, mark it as a feature request.
