Unity fails after update Nvidia Graphic

Asked by Jerry Price

I have a Toshiba Techra M5 Laptop with a Nvidia QuadroNSV 100M graphics card running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS happily for a year. An update on 30/6/15 caused Unity to fail to load properly. I realise there is a lot about this and have tried a lot of it but it's failing to load properly.
When I initially installed Ubuntu last year I had to installa propriety driver NVidea Legacy binary driver version 304.117 to get past the Nouveau driver that froze the screen. It worked fine until yesterday. I now get to the login screen but it then takes a long time to load and I get fuzzy icons on the launcher and menu bar and nothing actually loads ot takes a long time and then freezes
I have tried changing the driver through the menu bar, system settings, software, proprietary drivers but 304.117 is not there,
(works very slowly) and then freezers, I have tried the grub menu recovery feature Run in failsafe graphics mode, but the mouse and keyboard freezers, I have tried instructions in this forum to update, upgrade, and install proprietary drivers but that hasn't worked. I've tried repairing broken packages from the grub recovery mode but get multiple errors " could not resolve xxxxx ", failed to fetch PPA launchpad.net.
I've attempted to use a Live DVD to change to driver but is does not load a live session.
Would appreciate some patient guidance to get running again

If you boot a different kernel, is it OK?

Hi actionparsnip
There are two kernels on the grub menu, 3.13.0-29 and 3.13.0-27.
Neither kernel would get me to the ubuntu unity screen after logging in. Both gave the fuzzy icons on the launcher bar and the menu bar and neither worked.
I have been trying solutions from askubuntu, mainly on the 27 kernel using the drop to root shell prompt from the recovery menu . One of which was to remove everything to do with the Nvidia proprietary drivers and to remove the xserver -- and then install nvidia current, xserver etc.. This hasn't worked and the 27 kernel just returns to the login screen after inserting the password. It doesn't even try to load the untity screen anymore.
At least the 29 kernel tries to load unity even if it is fuzzy and won't work
