Empty GUI on Ubuntu 14.04 desktop

Asked by Angel Echevarria

I installed open vm tools using the command
sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-lts-trusty

Afterwards I ran startx. I logged into the gui, but afterwards the screen is completely blank, with just the background. I can right click and create documents, and I can run the terminal using ctl+alt+T. Any reason why there are no shortcuts? Thanks for the help.
