Issues with installing vmware tools for ubuntu 14.04

Asked by Angel Echevarria

I downloaded the ubuntu 14.04 iso for desktop off of the ubuntu website to use for my vmware workstation 9. However, easy install doesn't work. I went through some suggestions from various sites, so I ended up making a new directory called /mnt/cdrom and mounting the /dev/cdrom to that directory. Looking at a youtube channel, when you list the files in the /mnt/cdrom, VMwareTools-<esx version>.i386.tar.gz or a similar file shows. However, when I do the same steps, the that VMware tools file isn't present. Instead, these files are

autorun.inf casper EFI isolinux pics preseed ubuntu
boot dists install md5sum.txt pool README.diskdefines wubu.exe

Any idea what went wrong here? why aren't the same files displaying?
