How do I remove a drive that does not let me?

Asked by Brutal_Moose

I am a novice at Linux. If you have advice, or an answer to my question, please give a full explanation, so that I may understand it. Please do not omit any steps in the instructions, or I will probably not be able to complete them.

     Ubuntu 15.04 laptop.

Here are the steps that I use to replicate my issue:

          1) Insert removable drive
          2) Ubuntu automatically mounts drive
          3) While viewing the desktop, on the left panel of the screen, locate the icon for the removable drive, and right click it
          4) A list appears, and gives 4 options. Half of the time, the 4th option is "Unmount", and the other of the of time it is
              "Safely remove drive".

Why does Ubuntu only list "Safely remove drive" half of the time?

Some of the filesystem is Microsoft Reserved, and most of it is NTFS.

I suggest you run a chkdsk in Windows on the drive. Make sure the file system is consistent
