No display on ATI Rage XL 8MB r27

Asked by Bryce Browner

I'm relatively new to linux and I have an HP ProLiant DL380 G4 with an integrated ATI Rage XL 8MB r27 video card. I am attempting to run Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS on it. The installation disc displays everything fine on the monitor, but as soon as the installed environment is booted, my screen becomes a series of glitchy white lines and bars on a black background for a minute before becoming 2 glitchy horizontal white dashes at the top and middle of the screen on a black background. I have googled the issue, but I am apparently the only one who has it. Neither HP nor AMD provide Ubuntu or Debian drivers for the video card. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The video drivers are part of the default install but the server install will not use this as it doesn't use Xorg. Have you tried setting the boot option:

nomodeset

I just tried booting with nomodeset and it did not produce any noticeable effect.

Setting the boot option vga=792 resolved the issue.
