No sound with Intel 82801DB/DBL/DBM Audio Controller

Asked by Randy LeJeune

I reinstalled Hardy heron a few days ago and now I have no sound. I have a 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) as per my lspci command. The odd thing about this is that when I installed Gusty some months ago, the same thing happened until I downloaded the gnome-alsamixer program and fiddled with the controls some. I upgraded to Hardy and had sound there as well. But having reinstalled, sound is gone once again.

My lsmod output looks like this:

I am using a Dell Dimension 2400 PC. Does any one have any clue what could be the problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi !

is your kernel up-to-date ? the first 2.6.24-12 kernel had sound problems. It has been solved in an update recently

Thanks for the reply. What seemed to happen was this . . . I installed alsa-utils, but had not checked the box under "Services" . . . I did that then fiddled around with the controls using the gnome-alsamixer and now the sound is working perfectly. Kernel was already updated, so it looks to me like I needed to check the alsa-utils service as the operative factor. I think this is what I did before but since I solved it by accident previously, I wasn't sure precisely how to resolve it. Thanks for the reply, though.
